On September 12, various topics about Kim Tae-ri’s upcoming K-drama, “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born”, were published on the Korean forum “theqoo”, drawing significant attention.

These topics include excerpts from news articles about the K-drama, wherein it was confirmed that the production company decided to “modify the characters” due to the original work containing “sensitive” elements of girl love (GL, or lesbian elements).

In fact, it is known that in the original webtoon for “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born”, the female lead has feelings for a same-sex character, but this character has been removed in the K-drama.

As a result, criticism started to arise, with netizens stating that if the production company had to do so many revisions because of the original lesbian material, they should have created a completely new work instead of adapting a girl love webtoon.

Below are some comments from netizens:

  • In the first place, why did they take a girl love work and wants to take the lesbian relationship out?
  • It was a lesbian love story to begin with, so if they are going to take the girl love elements out, then they shouldn’t have used the original at all
  • Why can’t they just write a new script with a lot of heterosexuality that they like? Why do they have to take an original girl love work and try to modify it?
  • How can they just change it to friendship or remove an important character?
  • The more I think about it, the more I feel sorry for the character and all I can do is curse. Just make something completely different
  • Our country still has a long way to go
  • In the end, they erased the queer character without respecting the original work…
