Note: The following text contains major spoilers from The Fiery Priest Season 1. Read at your discretion.

Season 1 Key Points

1. Why Did Kim Hae Il (Kim Nam Gil) become a hot-blooded Priest?

Kim Hae Il is a hot-blooded priest who explodes with anger intermittently. In Season 1, the reason behind why he turned out this way was revealedOriginally, Kim Hae Il was an anti-terrorism agent with the National Intelligence Service (NIS). However, during a mission to suppress terrorism in Urzikstan, he witnessed children being killed in an explosion due to his superior’s orders. This traumatic event led to him developing severe PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and clashing with the superior who had given the order. He then left NIS.

After his NIS records were erased, Kim Hae Il became an ordinary citizen. Overwhelmed by the trauma, he turned to alcohol and led a dreary life until he met Father Gabriel Lee Young Joon (Jung Dong Hwan), who became his savior. Kim then became a priest. However, when Father Lee Young Joon died under mysterious circumstances, Kim Hae Il’s anger began to flare up again. As he delved into the investigation, his extraordinary resilience and stupendous martial arts skills from his days as an elite anti-terrorism agent re-ignited again.

2. Why did Park Gyeong Sun (Lee Ha Nee) and Koo Dae Yeong (Kim Sung Kyun), the villainous prosecutor and cowardly detective, become Kim Hae Il’s trusted allies?

Park Gyeong Sun (Lee Ha Nee) and Koo Dae Young (Kim Sung Kyun) were originally obstacles standing in Kim Hae Il’s way in Season 1, but they eventually underwent a transformation and became his allies.

In Season 1, Park Gyeong Sun was a power-seeker who wasn’t intimidated by anything. She collaborated with the police to frame Father Lee Young Joon, constantly clashing with Kim Hae Il and mocking him. However, when she went to find idol Kim, who had attempted suicide due to a drug-related scandal she had fabricated, she nearly lost her life at the hands of the real culprit. She was saved by Kim Hae Il. This incident marked a turning point, leading her to switch sides and fully embrace a righteous path.

Park Gyeong Sun then played a crucial role in carrying out the investigation while cooperating with Kim Hae Il and infiltrating the cartel to uncover information.

In Season 1, Koo Dae Yeong (Kim Sung Kyun) was ordered by the “Gudam Cartel” to obstruct Kim Hae Il’s actions. He was a somewhat clueless officer who was all show and no go. But he wasn’t always like that. Koo Dae Young had once been a hot-blooded detective who would stop at nothing, but after a fellow officer died because of Hwang Cheol Bum‘s (Go Jun) gang, he became a cowardly detective who turned a blind eye to the cartel’s crimes.

However, as he began to uncover the truth alongside Kim Hae Il, Koo Dae Young underwent a transformation. When Kim Hae Il promised to protect the family of the deceased officer, Koo decided to stand on the side of justice. Furthermore, Koo Dae Young showed off his incredible headbutting skills that allowed him to easily deal with a bunch of gangsters at once.

3. Oh Yo Han (Go Gyu Pil), Song Sak (Ahn Chang Hwan), Kim In Kyung (Baek Ji Won), Han Sung Kyu (Jeon Sung Woo): Abilities of the Gudam Avengers to Watch Out For!

Oh Yo Han (Go Gyu Pil), Song Sak (Ahn Chang Hwan), Kim In Kyung (Baek Ji Won), and Han Sung Kyu (Jeon Sung Woo) were the Gudam Avengers in Season 1. Oh Yo Han is a timid convenience store employee with a unique constitution where his hearing and hunger are linked — eating a lot enhances his hearing ability. With his incredible hearing, he played a crucial role in acquiring important information.

Song Sak is Oh Yo Han’s friend and a Thai delivery man who works at a Chinese restaurant. He used to be a royal bodyguard in Thailand and possesses extraordinary Muay Thai skills.

Sister Kim In Kyung appears to be a calm nun, but she has a fiery temperament just like Kim Hae Il’s and a past as a legendary card player known as Pyeongtaek Ten Tail.

Father Han Sung Kyu was once a genius child actor who could deliver a performance so powerful it could even move Russian mobsters.

The Fiery Priest Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on November 8. The K-drama will be available to stream on Disney+.
