Gangnam B-Side is a crime K-drama that follows a top detective who, after being demoted, joins forces with a prosecutor and a mysterious broker to take down sinister forces operating in the shadows of Gangnam’s nightlife.
Ji Chang Wook takes on the role of Yun Gil Ho, an outlaw who dominates the Gangnam area and also a mysterious broker who has placed himself on the list of suspects.
Yun Gil Ho survived alone in the darkest corners of Gangnam’s back alleys without anyone’s help and thus emanates a chilling aura with his expressionless face and cold gaze.
Ji Chang Wook shared, “A lot of time was spent on makeup to create the scars for each shoot.” “While things like hairstyle, outfits, earrings, and tattoos were, of course, important, the scars on my face were what I considered most significant.” He added, “Yun Gil Ho rarely shows a clean face,” and explained, “I thought that was the biggest device to imply and express the kind of life the character has led.”
Ji Chang Wook also said about Yun Gil Ho, “He’s a person who keeps a clear line between those who are his people and those who aren’t.” He went on to say, “Since the character expresses himself more through his gaze and actions than through dialogue, I paid attention to the movement in every scene,” sharing his thoughts that “it was yet another new challenge.”
Actor Jo Woo Jin praised him, saying, “I saw him even more upgraded than before. I felt that his range has become broader and deeper,” and heightened anticipation for the project by adding, “You’ll get to see an upgraded version of Ji Chang Wook’s charm.”
Jo Woo Jin gains 18 Kg for his role in Gangnam B-Side
Jo Woo Jin plays Detective Kang Dong Woo, who was demoted due to a certain incident in the past, returns to solve a series of disappearance cases in Gangnam.
Jo Woo Jin described Kang Dong Woo as a character who “unconditionally takes action when he believes something is just and right.” True to his nature as a principled detective with a strong sense of justice, he dives headfirst into the cases he takes on. However, in his latest case, he encounters a shocking turning point in the middle of the story.
Jo Woo Jin explained, “As he delves into the truth of the case involving numerous characters, I tried to express how Kang Dong Woo undergoes a transformation in a multi-dimensional way. It would be interesting to explore that aspect.” He added, “When I first came upon this project, the first thing I felt was a sense of challenge of how I could differentiate this character from the ones I’ve played before.” He particularly noted, “Many people tend to judge characters based on their first impressions, so I wanted Kang Dong Woo’s honesty to be reflected in his appearance. That’s why I started gaining weight from that day,” ultimately adding 18 kg to enhance his portrayal of the character.
Ji Chang Wook praised Jo, saying, “It felt like I met a respected senior, a warm older brother, and a friend I can trust. That made it easy for me to perform and enjoy my acting.”
Gangnam B-Side will be released exclusively on Disney+ on November 6.
