Kim Tae-ri’s “Jeongnyeon” Surpasses “Queen of Tears” with Record Rating?

According to Nielsen Korea, a ratings research company, the fourth episode of tvN’s weekend drama “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” (also referred to as “Jeongnyeon”, which aired on October 20, recorded a 12.7% viewership rating (based on Nielsen Korea’s nationwide paid platform criteria). This marks the show’s highest rating to date, achieving double-digit viewership in only its fourth broadcast.

“Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” is a drama that portrays the competition, solidarity, and brilliant growth story of Yoon Jeong-nyeon (portrayed by Kim Tae-ri), a “born vocal genius” who aspires to become the best national theater actress in the 1950s, following the Korean War. The show released its first episode on October 12.

In the fourth episode, Jeong-nyeon, after being expelled from the Maeran National Theater Troupe, dreams of returning while preparing for her debut as a television singer as a temporary measure for survival. Kim Tae-ri’s passionate performance in this process shone through, eliciting a positive response from viewers.

Kim Tae-ri takes the lead role, with PD Jung Ji-in, who directed the MBC drama “The Red Sleeve”, at the helm. The show also garnered attention before its premiere with a cast including Shin Ye-eun, Ra Mi-ran, Jung Eun-chae, Kim Yun-hye, and Moon So-ri. It was expected to continue the successful streak of tvN’s weekend dramas this year, following hits like “Queen of Tears”, “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon”, “The Auditors”, and “Love Next Door”.

Living up to expectations, “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” recorded viewership ratings of 4.8% for its first episode, 8.2% for the second, and 9.2% for the third. It has shown a trend of breaking its own highest ratings with each episode.

There is growing anticipation about whether “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” will claim the top spot in weekend (Saturday, Sunday) primetime drama ratings. This is because it’s gradually closing the gap with KBS 2TV’s weekend drama “Iron Family”, which currently holds the number one position for Sunday primetime dramas.

The eighth episode of “Iron Family”, which aired on October 20, recorded a 16.2% viewership rating (based on Nielsen Korea’s nationwide criteria). Compared to the fourth episode of “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born”, the difference is 3.5%. As such, attention is focused on whether “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” will demonstrate another “box office power” by overtaking KBS weekend drama ratings, following “Queen of Tears”, which ended in April. “Queen of Tears” recorded its highest viewership of 24.9% (for its 16th and final episode), surpassing the ratings of KBS 2TV’s weekend drama “Beauty and Mr. Romantic” at the time to claim the top spot in weekend drama ratings.

Amid the success of “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born”, “Iron Family” and JTBC’s weekend drama “A Virtuous Business” are also experiencing a rise in viewership, continuing an exciting weekend competition. The 16.2% viewership for the 8th episode of “Iron Family” is its highest rating to date, riding a recent upward trend in viewership. Additionally, “A Virtuous Business”, which premiered on October 12, also broke its own record with a 5.9% viewership rating for its 4th episode aired on October 20 (based on Nielsen Korea’s nationwide paid platform criteria).
