The revelation that HYBE has been creating industry trend reports, known as “HYBE Internal Reports,” containing provocative evaluations of the appearances of domestic idol group members has caused controversy. On the 29th, the author of the report was suspended from their position.
According to the music industry, HYBE has suspended Kang, the CCO, from their role as head of the “Weekly Music Industry Report” due to the growing controversy surrounding the provocative and dehumanizing content.
These internal reports have been sent weekly to the top executives (C-level) of HYBE and its affiliated labels. The content of the report came to light during a National Assembly audit on October 24, when Democratic Party member Min Hyung-bae raised questions about it, leading to the ensuing controversy.
The report included shocking comments about the appearances of domestic idol group members, such as “The members debuted at an age when they were especially ugly, and none of them really look like idols, plus they have undergone excessive plastic surgery,” “There’s a noticeable trend related to appearance and s** appeal,” and “Some members are surprisingly ugly.”
In response, HYBE released an official statement, saying, “The monitoring report disclosed in the National Assembly is a document that compiles various reactions and opinions from fandoms and the industry.” They clarified that the report was created to share community and social media reactions as they are for internal reference among a small number of staff and does not represent HYBE’s stance.
However, additional content from the report was leaked online, amplifying the controversy. As the situation escalated, Seungkwan from the HYBE label group SEVENTEEN criticized the remarks on the 29th, stating, “We are not people who have been able to operate smoothly and quietly enough to be judged so easily by you. I hope you don’t take idols lightly.”
