A legendary performance fitting of the K-pop king
For K-pop fans, G-Dragon and Taeyang’s iconic 2014 MAMA stage remains unforgettable. Back then, G-Dragon shook the industry with a scathing rap that criticized the award show itself, accusing MAMA of distributing awards in a “participation prize” manner. The line “It’s been a while, MAMA. Looks like you’ve already prepared the big awards. Everyone gets a share, so no need to fight” became legendary, cementing his reputation for boldness and authenticity.
Following that controversial performance, MAMA and YG Entertainment seemed to be in conflict. For a decade, YG’s artists struggled to win at MAMA, culminating in public tensions like BLACKPINK being sidelined in 2017.
Yet, MAMA eventually sought reconciliation with G-Dragon, acknowledging his unparalleled influence. This year, G-Dragon’s performance wasn’t just a return—it was a revival of MAMA’s golden era.
G-Dragon’s performance, introduced by actress Kim Tae-ri, ignited the venue with his magnetic presence. Fans turned the blue-themed lightstick sea into a glowing gold tribute, mirroring the iconic crown lightstick of BIGBANG. Opening with the emotional “Untitled, 2014,” G-Dragon transitioned to “Power” with the resonant line “Guess who’s back? It’s our boy—G.D,” asserting his unshaken legacy.
Dressed in a striking pink outfit with red hair and a crown, G-Dragon embodied his nickname – K-pop king. The performance encapsulated his journey from a young dreamer to the undisputed king of K-pop, crowned by the symbolic title “Übermensch.” This term, meaning “superhuman,” resonates with themes of transcending adversity and self-mastery, likely hints at G-Dragon’s upcoming album.
Additionally, BIGBANG’s three members—G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung—also reunited to perform “Home Sweet Home,” their first song as the 3-member BIGBANG, marking an emotional homecoming for VIPs. They then lit up the stage with “Bang Bang Bang” and “Fantastic Baby”, evoking the explosive “MADE” era. This mini-concert within MAMA, which received explosive reactions from all celebrities at the show – from Kim Tae-ri and Ahn Jae-hyun to SEVENTEEN and aespa, became a fiery testament to their legacy.

Why G-Dragon wasn’t the closing act
Traditionally, a legend like G-Dragon would close the show. However, his performance was strategically placed during the transitional phase before the winners of this year’s Daesang (grand prizes) awards – aespa and SEVENTEEN.
As the winner of the “Song of the Year” Daesang, aespa delivered a futuristic medley of hits, showcasing flawless vocals and captivating choreography. Meanwhile, the “Album of the Year” and “Artist of the Year” winner – SEVENTEEN, ended the night with cinematic performances of their latest hits, continuing their legacy as top-tier live performers.
By stepping aside, G-Dragon allowed these younger acts to shine, especially as the two groups had entered a new stage in their career.
Yet, the male idol’s presence and performance remained the highlight of MAMA 2024, affirming his status. His stage energized the event, setting the tone for aespa and SEVENTEEN to deliver show-stopping finales.
In doing so, G-Dragon proved that he doesn’t need to be the “vedette” to command reverence.
