“IU Reported to CIA” Drama Unravels as CIA Blocks Emails

On December 24, a netizen identified as A shared a screenshot of an email from the CIA on X (formerly Twitter), claiming, “This is official. The CIA has taken action.”

A asserted, “A flood of reports from Korea overwhelmed the CIA. About 20,000~30,000 people have reported, potentially resulting in ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) issuance being blocked.

Earlier, IU gained attention for prepaying meals at restaurants and cafés near Yeouido, Seoul on December 14, allowing attendees of an impeachment rally to warm up during the cold weather. Following this, A posted about reporting IU’s prepayment donation to the CIA.

Additionally, some far-right individuals initiated boycotts against brands endorsed by IU and compiled a list of pro-impeachment celebrities to report them to the CIA. They sought to label these figures as North Korea sympathizers, aiming to complicate U.S. entry screenings or block ESTA approvals.

The CIA operates a dedicated reporting website where individuals can submit reports by entering an email, phone number and details of an incident.

The “Yoon Suk-yeol Impeachment Support List” includes names such as IU, NewJeans, Kim Eana, Go Min-si, Yoon Jong-shin, Lee Seung-hwan, Yuri, Moonbyul and Park Hyo-shin. It also features artists from various fields, including Choi Min-sik, Lee Dong-wook, Heo Sung-tae, Hwang Dong-hyuk, Yoon Il-sang, Park Myung-soo and Bong Joon-ho.

Contrary to A’s claims, the CIA’s email confirmed it had blocked A’s email address due to excessive submissions. It appears A misinterpreted the content of the message.

The CIA explained to A, “You have attempted to submit multiple reports too rapidly. From the same computer, only one different report can be submitted every 10 minutes. This policy is designed to reduce excessive submissions. If the second email was meant to add or clarify information from the first report, we sincerely apologize for this action.”

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that U.S. visa and immigration matters fall under the jurisdiction of the State Department, not the CIA.
