Lightsticks are an iconic part of K-pop concerts, creating a sea of glowing support for performers. At multi-group events like music festivals, fans from different fandoms typically keep their lightsticks on out of respect, even for groups they don’t actively follow.
However, there have been instances in K-pop history where audiences deliberately turned off their lightsticks, creating a “black ocean.” This act, often seen as a sign of protest or dislike, is rare but unforgettable, with one of the most famous examples involving Girls’ Generation.
Recently, rumors surfaced online claiming that LE SSERAFIM experienced a black ocean during their performance at the 2024 Gayo Daejeon on Christmas Day. The star-studded event featured performances from many top groups, and LE SSERAFIM wowed the audience with their segment titled “Category is LE SSERAFIM,” which included a dynamic dance break and a remix of “CRAZY.”
Despite their powerful performance, some fans raised concerns online about the audience’s lack of lightstick support. Given that LE SSERAFIM has faced criticism in the past, particularly over their live vocals, some wondered if this alleged “black ocean” was intentional.
However, after reviewing footage and comparing performances, it became clear that this was not a targeted act against LE SSERAFIM. The audience’s lightsticks were notably dim during their performance, but this was consistent with other groups like aespa and ILLIT, where the crowd’s lights were similarly sparse.
Fans who attended the event also pointed out that many audience members were busy filming performances, which may explain why their lightsticks weren’t visible.
Comments online supported this, with some including, “I don’t think there was any black ocean. I checked other performances, and the crowd looked the same,” “In clearer videos, you can see most people filming instead of holding up lightsticks,” and “There was no black ocean. I watched all the performances, and the crowd reactions were consistent.”
