“Squid Game 2” has finally arrived with much anticipation, but it fails to meet the high expectations set by its predecessor. The new cast, including Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, and T.O.P, brings fresh energy, but the plot drags as it focuses too much on Gi-hun’s motivations and lacks the excitement that fans expected.
The series picks up once the games begin, introducing new challenges like “Mugunghwa Blossom” and “Group 5 Event,” which inject tension and excitement. However, the reduced number of games, compared to the first season, is disappointing. The group-based games, where survival depends on teamwork, offer some thrilling moments, but the overall pacing feels off.
One major flaw is T.O.P’s performance as Thanos, a rapper involved in a coin scam. Initially, his role was expected to be minor, but his character appears frequently, causing disruptions in the narrative. His awkward acting and strange behavior overshadow other characters, with his rap scenes becoming cringe-worthy and sparking online discussions. His casting has stirred controversy, especially given his past legal issues. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk defended the decision, explaining that T.O.P showed courage in taking on the role, but many viewers are left questioning whether the casting choice was a mistake.
While “Squid Game 2” does have some gripping moments once the games truly begin, the pacing issues and T.O.P’s disruptive performance prevent the season from fully delivering on its promise. The anticipation was high, but the result leaves fans wondering if the hype may have been more damaging than expected.
