Kim Ji-won Empty-Handed at Awards Despite “Queen of Tears” Success

In 2024, Kim Ji-won went viral worldwide for her leading role in “Queen of Tears”. In the drama, she portrayed Hong Hae-in, a wealthy heiress and successor to a Korean conglomerate who learned that she’s facing a terminal illness.

Despite getting married for love, Hong Hae-in has been distant from her husband Baek Hyun-woo, who came from a humble background, for a long time, and the two tried to reconnect in what was supposed to be Hong Hae-in’s final months.

Her appearance in “Queen of Tears” earned Kim Ji-won immense love from audiences and marked a new peak in her acting career. However, as various film and drama awards were held in South Korea, many netizens noticed that despite her soaring popularity, Kim Ji-won did not attend any award shows.

Additionally, although her role as Hong Hae-in received multiple nominations, she ultimately lost in all categories.

Meanwhile, Kim Ji-won’s co-star in “Queen of Tears”, Kim Soo-hyun, was crowned as the winner of the Grand Prize Daesang at the Asian Artist Awards (AAA).

During his acceptance speech, he gave special thanks to Kim Ji-won, saying, “I want to dedicate this honor to Kim Ji-won, who beautifully brought Hong Hae-in, the greatest character in the world, to life.”

The actor acknowledged that he could not have fully embodied his role without her support. However, Kim Soo-hyun’s gracious words only deepened the regret felt by fans for Kim Ji-won and fueled enthusiasm for their real-life pairing.

Kim Ji-won’s lack of recognition at the year-end awards in 2024 may have been due to several reasons. This year, Korean drama award ceremonies faced stiff competition from a slew of exceptional productions on the small screen, with various actresses delivering outstanding performance. In fact, another actor – Ji Sung, has also been empty-handed despite his outstanding performance in “Connection”, so it’s likely a case of luck not being on Kim Ji-won’s side.

Moreover, each judging panel also has different criteria. While *Queen of Tears* received widespread acclaim, awards are often based on factors beyond popularity, such as innovation in the script, the film’s overall achievements, and its artistic impact. Therefore, despite the series’ buzzworthiness, it may not receive critical acclaim – as proven by Cine21’s claim that “Queen of Tears” is the most overrated K-drama in 2024.

Looking on the positive side, despite the lack of awards, “Queen of Tears” has opened Kim Ji-won to numerous film offers and significantly boosted her commercial value with a host of lucrative advertising deals. Fans of the actress should not feel too disheartened.
