Lee Byung-hun “‘Squid Game 2’ Young-il, a Character with Three Names, Is Incredibly Multifaceted”

On January 2, a video titled “Lee Byung-hun Explains Highlight Scene 001 and In-ho | Squid Game Season 2 | Netflix” was uploaded to the “Netflix Korea” YouTube channel.

In the video, Lee Byung-hun discussed behind-the-scenes stories about his character In-ho. He described In-ho as a person who has long lost any attachment to life, saying, “The idea of clinging to life has disappeared for him. Even if he were to die right now, it wouldn’t be a significant change. He feels like someone who is alive but doesn’t feel alive.”

Lee Byung-hun recalled, “Although I was part of Season 1, stepping into the role as a participant this time felt very unfamiliar and strange. It was a peculiar feeling, and I remember needing some time to adapt.”

Regarding the complexity of his character, he explained, “Young-il is a character with three names: the Front Man, In-ho and Young-il. He is incredibly multifaceted. When he talks about his past, he momentarily becomes the previous In-ho. The secretive infiltrator Front Man reflects the false identity of Young-il, and the time the Front Man spends participating in the game is all about deciding where the emphasis lies.”

He added, “For me, the most crucial point and the detail I needed to focus on while acting was balancing the weight between the transformed self as the Front Man and the more human self he was before experiencing all of these events. Fine-tuning these aspects of the character was essential.

Meanwhile, Netflix’s “Squid Game” Season 2 centers on a fierce showdown between Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), who returns to the game seeking revenge, and the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun), who awaits him.
