After 2 months of broadcasting, “When The Phone Rings” finally wrapped up its journey with a happy ending.
At the beginning of the last episode (episode 12), 406 shoots Baek Sa-eon (Yoo Yeon-seok), and Hong Hee-joo (Chae Soo-bin) cries desperately. When Hong Hee-joo wakes up, the fact is Baek Sa-eon has disappeared from her life. He has gone missing for half a year after quitting his job and donating all his property.
With Park Do-jae’s advice, Hong Hee-joo begins to look for the reason Baek Sa-eon suddenly disappears. While searching for the reason for her husband’s disappearance, she finds out that Baek Sa-eon has quietly prepared many things to make her happy, from learning how to become a good husband as well as taking care of her father. One day, she receives a call with the dial-in code 604 and it eventually hints that Baek Sa-eon is living in Argan, a place in war.
Hong Hee-joo decided to visit Argan to find Baek Sa-eon although everyone around her was against the decision. Asking locals for directions, she finally finds a place to watch the sunset, Baek Sa-eon’s favorite scene. As previously warned, Hong Hee-joo is attacked by a masked gunman. In the critical moment, Baek Sa-eon appears and saves her. Baek Sa-eon gets angry at Hong Hee-joo seeing her coming all the way to such a dangerous place despite him reminding her to wait for his return. Finally, he confesses the truth about his disappearance, revealing that he felt guilty for being the cause of her younger brother’s death, which caused Hong Hee-joo to become silent for 20 years.
However, Hong Hee-joo immediately forgave him with a kiss. After falling apart for such a very long time, the two later spend a hot night together and officially reunite. They move to a new house and get married again. Baek Sa-eon also changes his name to Baek Yoo-yeon. At their family party, Ji Sang-woo and Yoori also announce their marriage.
The ending of “When The Phone Rings” received compliments for dealing with all the issues completely, even the relationships with the supporting characters. Episode 12 ended with Baek Sa-eon and Hong Hee-joo walking hands in hand like a normal couple.
