Jennie Misses BLACKPINK and is Learning to Love Herself

On January 9, Billboard unveiled its latest magazine cover featuring BLACKPINK’s Jennie, accompanied by an exclusive interview where she shared insights into the creation of her highly anticipated debut solo album.

Jennie’s career has been meticulously managed since she joined YG Entertainment at 14 and became a BLACKPINK member at 20, achieving historic milestones like BLACKPINK’s Coachella performances in 2019 and 2023. However, her busy schedule left little time for solo creativity. After BLACKPINK re-signed with YG in 2023, Jennie launched her label OddAtelier and began working on her debut solo album.

Stepping Out of Her Comfort Zone for Her Solo Album

For her debut album, Jennie is blending different genres and characters, aiming to express herself fully as Jennie Ruby-Jane. She wanted every song to reflect her vision, ensuring no track was forced onto the album.

Jennie intentionally recorded most of her album in L.A., seeking to step out of her comfort zone in Seoul. She shared that she felt like she had ‘more freedom’ in L.A. compared to Seoul, where she enjoyed the ability to go out and eat whenever and wherever she wanted. The biggest difference, she said, was the people around her. “I learn a lot from people in L.A. It’s a great environment, especially for people in music, to meet people that can inspire you,” she explained.

She added, “I just really wanted to throw myself out there to experience it. In Seoul, I was so comforted in an easy environment that I created a long time ago, and I didn’t enjoy it. I was like, ‘No, if this is your career and if this is your life, explore and learn.’ I kept telling myself that.”

Journey to Self-love

Jennie said working on her solo album has been a personal challenge, where the only person she negotiates with was herself. “It’s a fight between me, myself and I,” she admited, explaining that it forced her to reflect deeply.

She continued, “The more I get to know myself, the more I try to love myself. I’ve had a time in my life where I didn’t — I had no clue how to do that. I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t know what I was living for. The time where I was feeling clueless. The fact that I’ve moved on from that phase and being so committed to myself, I’m very proud.”

Jennie recalled a time when she felt overwhelmed by the pressure of chasing various labels like “K-pop” and “pop music.” Looking back, she wishes she could have embraced those moments of confusion and struggle, “Now that I look back, I just want to tell myself, ‘Maybe enjoy it a little, feeling lost in the struggle, because there will be a time where you don’t even have time to think you’re lost.’”

BLACKPINK’s Strong Bond and Future Plans

Jennie shared that BLACKPINK’s group chat was represented by a family emoji, symbolizing their strong bond. She said that despite their hectic schedules, they made an effort to stay in touch and check in with each other, “Even though we know we can’t see each other so much, it doesn’t really feel any different than all the other years because we know we’re here for each other. They’re literally a phone call away. And at this point, we respect each other’s space so much. So if there’s anything to be happy for, to celebrate, we’re all in it together.”

Jennie added that she missed being on tour with the group and cherished the fun moments they shared, “I’ve missed the girls. I’ve missed doing tours with them. I miss our silly moments.” She was excited to see what each member had to offer, as they had all taken different paths during their time apart. She also looked forward to reuniting and believed this would be the most powerful version of themselves that fans had ever seen.
