Im explained that the two had spent a lot of time together, as they took classes together for the role. An intense action scene with T.O.P, which involved stunts, particularly impressed the experienced actor, who holds leading roles in dramas Run On (2020), The King in Love (2017), and Misaeng: Incomplete Life (2014).
“We were both in the air during a take, and that’s when T.O.P broke his rib. I know how painful that is from my own experience, but he continued to push through,” he said.
“That’s when I realized that his level of professionalism was truly remarkable.”
The actor added that recent mixed reviews of T.O.P’s acting may be unfair, adding his balanced opinion that takes on acting are subjective.
“I think it’s natural for there to be differing opinions on his performance, but I think he brings something unique to the role,” he said, adding that he wouldn’t have been able to play characters like Thanos and that he himself would never attempt to rap in scenes.
Im, who plays a cryptocurrency YouTuber who lost all his money in a bad gamble, revealed that he has a bit of “experience in the field.”
“But the character is far more extreme than my own experiences. I’ve never done YouTube, but I watched many videos to get a feel for the tone and approach that I wanted to convey in my performance,” he said.
Despite mixed critical reviews, Squid Game 2 continues to be as big a global hit as its first season, accumulating 58.2 million viewing hours from December 30 to January 5 and ranking first in both English and non-English series categories across 93 countries.
