Amid a group of filmmakers issuing a final statement demanding the impeachment and arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol, it has been clarified that the participants named Kang Dong-won and Son Ye-jin are not the well-known actors but individuals with the same names.
On December 8, 81 organizations and 3,007 individuals, including film directors, actors, and students, with notable names such as Jeon Ji-hyun, Son Ye-jin, Kang Dong-won, Moon So-ri, director Bong Joon-ho, and more, issued a statement demanding the impeachment and arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol.
The statement emphasized, “To overcome the current chaotic situation and restore the diminished status of the Republic of Korea, the foremost condition is to halt President Yoon Suk-yeol’s exercise of his presidential duties. If impeachment is the fastest path, it must be pursued; otherwise, the swiftest method of removal must be identified.”
The group asserted that President Yoon, along with the martial law enforcers, must face immediate arrest and prosecution.
The filmmakers concluded, “To Korea’s film industry professionals, Yoon Suk-yeol is no longer a president but a criminal caught in the act. Suspend his duties, impeach him, and secure his arrest without delay.”
However, it was clarified that the previously mentioned names Kang Dong-won and Son Ye-jin referred not to the actors but to other individuals: one involved in film production and the other listed as an audience member.
The filmmakers’ group added: “Please ensure that directors/actors with the same names who are not part of this list do not become mistakenly associated with this statement in media coverage.”
Earlier, President Yoon Suk-yeol addressed the nation at 10 AM (KST), explaining his decision to declare martial law on December 3 at 11 PM. He stated that the order was lifted at 1 AM on December 4 after the National Assembly passed a resolution to revoke the martial law, which was followed by the military’s withdrawal and an emergency Cabinet meeting.
President Yoon described the martial law declaration as a measure born of “urgency as the head of state,” vowing to avoid any recurrence of such actions. He also stated that future political stability, including during his tenure, would be entrusted to his party, with both the government and the party jointly assuming responsibility.
Meanwhile, on December 7, the National Assembly held a plenary session to vote on President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment related to the martial law declaration. However, the motion failed as only three ruling party members (Ahn Cheol-soo, Kim Ye-ji, and Kim Sang-wook) participated in the vote, leaving it short of the required two-thirds majority (200 seats).
