Apartment 404 Episode 7 Recap

Apartment 404 Episode 7

The episode begins with the 6 member team, dressed in the top fashion of 2011. Even though it was just a decade ago, many things don’t trend anymore – like skinny jeans, flash mobs, etc. In 2011, the South Korean entertainment industry (K-pop and K-drama) was all the rage but at the same time, the working class people were suffering – especially the newly graduated college students.

In this episode, the crew left their apartments to become freshmen in a college with many suspicious activities. They go around to club initiation tents during freshmen day when they see an action-packed scene unfold in front of them – two detectives chase a serial robber riding a bike. Happy to get their first clue, the 6 of them get divided into two teams again. Jennie Kim, Yoo Jae-suk and Yang Se-chan join the dance club while Oh Na-ra, Lee Jung-ha and Cha Tae-hyun join the band club. At the dance club, the team meets Aiki, one of the most popular choreographers in the scene while the band club meets with Dickpunks, who change their name to N.O.B (Noryan’s Only Band).

The dance club feel like there is a clue in their dance routine as they dance to 2PM’s Heartbeat and Jennie understands it when they make a human pyramid. The band club remain clueless as they test their pitch. The two teams play a game alongside Aiki and Dickpunks and the dance club wins in the end. They win their first clue as well as a delicious lunch.

The winning team go to a room where Woo-il meets them to show a video alongside other students in the room. The video is a 2011 news clip where the announcer tells the heartbreaking story of college students. During that time, many students would take gap years and complete their course in 5 instead of 4 years. Some students resorted to causing bodily harm to innocent people on the streets or in establishments to gain some money.

They receive a prompt at the end of the video – to check the art, photography and garden rooms. Just as they take in the horrible news and the incident, Woo-il points out that the students have disappeared. The three of them look back to notice that the students are gone and there are no exits. Shocked at this information, the three of them search all over the room and try to connect the dots. The losing team get the same prompt and they go to the art room to look for clues.

Both teams find multiple papers with black incoherent shapes, which they must put together to understand the incident at the university. While the band club did not get much time to put the puzzle together, the dance club did so. As they all go to the other rooms, they find the keyword of the day- pyramid scheme. We find out that 5000 or more students were involved in a pyramid scheme due to the need to make some money.

In 2011, many students who went to college were looking for ways to make money in order to make up for the increasing tuition fees that their families could not afford. Posed as an easy way to make money, the students were lured in through different clubs to join the pyramid scheme and soon, they had immense amounts of debt to pay off, which they did by adopting illegal ways like robbery.

The teams go to the cafeteria to eat food when they notice the same occurrence of students disappearing into thin air. Unable to let it go, they keep it in the back of their mind and continue playing another game. Jennie’s team wins yet again and they get their second clue. Both the teams get a clue but the winning teams get more. Se-chan and Jung-ha stay back to shoot a commercial while Jennie Kim, Jae-suk, Na-ra and Tae-hyun go to the gym to play the tape.

They question the remaining two members’ disappearance but don’t pay much heed to it as they see their next clue. The lore gets deeper and more twisted as we see that the 5000 students were trapped in small rooms as they were not allowed to go anywhere on their own – not even the toilet. They spent their days training to sell the items they were assigned and the nights, eating ramen together. Run by their seniors and other graduates, the victims had no choice but to adhere to worse ways for their freedom.

The video ends with telling them to find the missing students as well as Jung-ha and Se-chan, who get kidnapped. Flabbergasted at the turn of events, they are led to a room with pictures of all the missing students. They initially thought that Jung-ha and Se-chan were the ring-leaders of the pyramid scheme but they turned out to be kidnapped students themselves.

The prompt is that the team that finds their member by 4 PM, will be crowned the winners and be given a prize. While the winning team get an extra clue that helps them find the location of Se-chan, the losing team get a call from Jung-ha who describes the way to the location through sound. Tae-hyun and Na-ra find Jung-ha’s container but are stumped at the passcode. Both the teams race to find the clue but Tae-hyun’s team turn out to be faster – making them the winners.

They end the episode by talking about the harrowing incident and how there were over 10,000 students trapped in the scheme. They also pointed out the new schemes after that year that lured students into investing in cryptocurrencies.

Apartment 404 Episode 7 Review

This episode had layers that kept us clinging to our seats till the end. With a heart-breaking case as such, one cannot help but feel for those students who were lured into the pyramid scheme. With scams prolonging to this day due to the increasing unemployment among young adults, it is sad to see the lengths students would go to pay off their debts.

Jennie and Yoo Jae-suk stand out in this episode as they go around solving the case with new-found skills. Being 7 episodes in, the two have formed a great relationship as they pair up to find clues and with their deduction skills, they can solve the clues quite quickly. Yang Se-chan continues to show off his variety skills with his comedic timing and one-liners as well as smart deductions.

Cha Tae-hyun, Oh Na-ra and Lee Jung-ha seem off in the episode as they do not shine as much and seem to lag behind the rest of the members. We hope to see them shine more in the last episode of the series.
