Two beloved Korean dramas are making their way to Japan in fresh adaptations, marking another milestone in the global popularity of K-content.
SLL Confirmed “Beyond Evil” Remake
On April 23, content studio SLL confirmed that its award-winning psychological thriller Beyond Evil will be getting a Japanese remake, set to premiere this July on the satellite broadcaster WOWOW. Interestingly, it was WOWOW who first proposed the remake, demonstrating strong interest in the story’s complex themes and characters.

Japanese actors Ken Yasuda and Koshi Mizukami have been cast in the lead roles, taking on characters originally played by Shin Ha-kyun and Yeo Jin-goo. First broadcast on JTBC in 2021, Beyond Evil follows two morally ambiguous detectives chasing a serial killer whose crimes mirror an unsolved case from two decades earlier. The show delves deeply into questions of morality, trauma, and what it truly means to be a “monster.”
Despite modest average ratings in the 4% range, the series was critically acclaimed, winning Best Drama and Best Actor (Shin Ha-kyun) at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards. Director Shim Na-yeon called it a “thriller deeply infused with Korean sentiment,” emphasizing the cast’s deeply human performances.
Suspicious Partner’s Japanese Remake On Air in April
Meanwhile, the 2017 romantic comedy Suspicious Partner is also getting the remake treatment. Set to air on MBS and TBS from April 29, the Japanese version stars Yusei Yagi of FANTASTICS and Kyoko Saito, formerly of Hinatazaka46. The original starred Ji Chang-wook and Nam Ji-hyun and followed a prosecutor and a quirky rookie lawyer as they fall in love while unraveling a mystery.

The Japanese remake of Suspicious Partner will be available not just in Japan but across Asia, including South Korea, via Disney+, expanding its reach to a broader audience.
With both dramas being reimagined for Japanese viewers, these remakes further cement the international appeal of K-dramas and the rich storytelling that continues to resonate across cultures.
