Captivating the King Episode 12 Recap

The episode commences with the Crown Prince pondering the significance of a burnt peach tree planted by his brother, interpreting it as a celestial omen. Disturbed, he discusses it with Queen Dowager, who tries to manipulate him, anticipating a misguided decision born out of empathy. Subsequently, in a general assembly, the King inquires about a thunder strike.

Myung-ha bravely steps forward, asserting that heaven is displeased due to the neglected tree, urging the King to punish him. Touched by Myung-ha’s sincerity, the King refuses punishment, provoking the Principal Director. The Inspector General interprets the thunder strike as a call to address corruption, gaining the King’s favor. He mandates officials to report any loopholes. Envious of the Inspector General’s influence, the Principal Director schemes to find a new Queen for the King.

He approaches the military minister, suggesting an alliance with his nieces. Learning of this, the minister, aspiring for Royal Family status, is infuriated. However, the Principal Director, aligning with Hyun-bo, proposes the alliance for Grand Prince Mun-seong instead. Meanwhile, as the Queen’s health deteriorates, she requests the Great Lord, her father, to petition the King to adopt Mun-seong as the heir and make him the Crown Prince.

Mong-woo and Myung-ha convince the Minister of the Military to support the petition and offer his daughter to Grand Prince Munseong. During the general assembly, the Great Lord submits the petition, surprising the crowd. The Principal Director panics, but to his astonishment, the members support the Great Lord. The Inspector General highlights the benefits of making Mun-seong the Crown Prince. The King, agreeing with the Queen’s dying wish, decides to adopt Mun-seong as their son.

The Queen Dowager vehemently opposes, declaring the decision over her dead body. That evening, at their usual spot, the King confides in the Principal Director, revealing his sinister intentions to use Mun-seong and eliminate him. Mong-woo overhears this, suffering in silence. That night, she and Dal-ha plan an assassination to be carried out the next night. The following day, the King adopts Mun-seong as the heir, and the Queen peacefully passes away, content that she has an heir to conduct her funeral. That night, as the King visits Mong-woo, unaware of Dal-ha’s presence, Hee-soo’s tears and plea to not enter hint at the impending revelation of the planned assassination.
