On November 3, Heo Ji-woong posted a cryptic message on his social media, saying, “I can’t take it anymore,” accompanied by an image with a black background.
Heo Ji-woong’s post came shortly after President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law. Netizens expressed agreement with his sentiments, using the post to vent their frustration about the chaotic situation.
Actor Kim Ki-cheon also criticized the declaration, sharing an image of President Yoon Suk-yeol announcing martial law on his account with the comment, “This will go down in history. Don’t be complicit in this treachery.” Similarly, actress Kim Ji-woo captured a news broadcast on her social media and expressed her disbelief, “In my lifetime… to personally experience martial law… and to witness martial forces blocking the National Assembly… What is this…”
Meanwhile, President Yoon Suk-yeol held an emergency briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office at 10:24 PM (KST) that evening to declare martial law. Targeting the National Assembly, he stated, “State governance has become paralyzed, and the people’s sighs are growing heavier. This is a blatant anti-national act that tramples on the constitutional order of free Korea and disrupts legitimate state institutions established by the Constitution and laws. To defend the Republic of Korea from the threats of North Korean communist forces, eradicate shameless pro-North Korea anti-state forces who are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and protect the constitutional order, I am declaring martial law.”
Martial law is a state of emergency declared by the president during times of extreme national crises, such as war, rebellion, or comparable threats to societal order, making it difficult for administrative and judicial functions to operate normally. This marks the first martial law declaration in 44 years since the May 18 Democratic Uprising in 1980. In response, the National Assembly convened a plenary session on November 4, passed a resolution demanding the lifting of martial law, and successfully approved it.
