Watching someone grow over time can be an emotional experience. However, for those who have been in the public eye since childhood, that journey comes with an enormous burden. Choi Yoojung, who debuted in the industry at just 17 through “Produce 101” Season 1 and became a member of I.O.I in 2016, candidly shared that the pressure was immense.
“When young trainees practice together, it’s a crucial time for developing their identities and values. Everything they experience at that stage influences them deeply,” she reflected.

Choi Yoojung admitted that training methods in her early days were quite rigorous. “To become an artist with real abilities, endless practice and discipline are required. However, at that young age, instincts often take the lead. The company had to be strict with us,” she explained. She also recalled conversations with fellow idols about the tough training they endured, adding to the pressure she felt.
As she continued, she shared how fragile she once was, “There was a time when I felt like glass, ready to shatter at any moment. The world’s stimuli could wound me deeply. But as I grew stronger, I learned to recover. Now, I’m even grateful for those challenges.” This self-awareness led her to open a personal channel, sharing small moments from her life and embracing her true self.
Overcoming Doubts and Fears
Though she wasn’t always confident, the support from fans and colleagues helped her heal. “I thought debuting would be the final goal, but that’s when I truly started to learn. I faced moments of doubt, wondering if I was suited for this career,” she admitted. Having trained since elementary school, she often questioned what the future held. “I started because I loved dancing, but I didn’t fully understand what being a celebrity entailed. I even considered what other careers I might pursue.”
Despite her uncertainties, one thing kept her going—her love for the stage. “There are many aspects of this job that suit me, and I truly enjoy performing. When I step on stage, I’m fully prepared, and at that moment, even hundreds of eyes on me don’t make me feel shy. That’s when I experience the greatest thrill and satisfaction.”
Shifting Mindsets for Growth
Choi Yoojung confessed that she used to feel anxious before work, often losing sleep the night before a shoot. But she has since learned to ease that pressure. “I used to overthink and feel trapped by my own worries. But when I realized that, I consciously changed my mindset. Now, I tell myself, ‘It’s just one day—just go and do your best.’ That shift has helped me face challenges with a clearer mind.”
She also discovered that overanalyzing could stifle her. “Too much thinking makes me rigid. But when I let go, I sometimes surprise myself with what I can accomplish. That feeling of pride makes me less afraid of new experiences.”
Plans as a Solo Artist and Actress
After releasing her first solo single “Sunflower” in 2022, Choi Yoojung found the experience deeply personal. “When I listen to it, it feels like reading an old diary. It’s a reflection of my journey.” Through solo promotions, she learned how to refine her artistic identity and hopes to bring more confidence to the stage in future projects. While no concrete plans are set, she continues to explore songwriting, learning guitar, and jotting down lyrics.
Even as she transitions out of group activities, one goal remains clear—enjoying the process. “Sometimes, even after all the preparation, being on stage feels completely free. I don’t want to lose that feeling.” She dreams of creating music that captures her emotions honestly, believing that someone out there will relate. “If that’s the case, why not be completely truthful in my work?”
Looking Ahead: Embracing Challenges
As she enters her 10th year in the industry, Choi Yoojung looks back with mixed emotions: pride, admiration, and even a little heartache. “It’s been a long road, but I feel grateful. I want to live a life where I can love myself without regrets.”
She recently auditioned for a new project, pushing herself beyond her comfort zone. “It was a daunting challenge, but I wanted to finish knowing I gave it my all. Surprisingly, it made me appreciate the process. For the first time, I found joy in an audition, not just anxiety.”
Reflecting on her driving forces—achievement, responsibility, and the love from fans—she emphasized, “Receiving love helps me love myself more. That’s what keeps me moving forward.”
Having made her musical debut last year and her film debut this year with “The Noisy Mansion,” she continues to take bold steps, even launching her own YouTube channel. “I want to show people that I’m not afraid of challenges. Whether it’s musicals, YouTube, or albums, I’ll take full responsibility for my choices.”
The Journey of a Determined Artist
The once timid trainee who cried in the practice room has grown into a thoughtful and sincere artist. With each step, she continues to balance the weight of her career with a strong sense of self.
