On December 7, 77 organizations and 2,518 individuals, including film directors, actors, and students, with notable names such as Jeon Ji-hyun, Son Ye-jin, Kang Dong-won, Moon So-ri, director Bong Joon-ho, and more, issued a statement demanding the impeachment and arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol.
The statement emphasized, “To overcome the current chaotic situation and restore the diminished status of the Republic of Korea, the foremost condition is to halt President Yoon Suk-yeol’s exercise of his presidential duties. If impeachment is the fastest path, it must be pursued; otherwise, the swiftest method of removal must be identified.”
The group asserted that President Yoon, along with the martial law enforcers, must face immediate arrest and prosecution.
The filmmakers concluded, “To Korea’s film industry professionals, Yoon Suk-yeol is no longer a president but a criminal caught in the act. Suspend his duties, impeach him, and secure his arrest without delay.”
Earlier, President Yoon Suk-yeol addressed the nation at 10 AM (KST), explaining his decision to declare martial law on December 3 at 11 PM. He stated that the order was lifted at 1 AM on December 4 after the National Assembly passed a resolution to revoke the martial law, which was followed by the military’s withdrawal and an emergency Cabinet meeting.
President Yoon described the martial law declaration as a measure born of “urgency as the head of state,” vowing to avoid any recurrence of such actions. He also stated that future political stability, including during his tenure, would be entrusted to his party, with both the government and the party jointly assuming responsibility.
Meanwhile, 190 lawmakers from the Democratic Party and five other opposition parties, along with independent lawmaker Kim Jong-min, have introduced an impeachment motion against President Yoon. The vote on the impeachment motion is scheduled for 5 PM today, December 7.
