A Chinese fan of IVE member Jang Wonyoung is drawing flak for making the idol say something rude in a foreign language.

On May 14, 2024, a Chinese fan of the IVE member took to Threads to share a screen recording of her fan call with Jang Wonyoung.

 

  

In the video, she asks Jang Wonyoung if she can teach her a phrase in Chinese. Jang Wonyoung agrees and repeats what the fan says.

When Jang Wonyoung is done, she asks the fan what the phrase means. She then tells the IVE member, “It means Wonyoung is the prettiest in the world. The most beautiful girl in the world.”

Except that is not what she made Jang Wonyoung say at all. Instead, she made Jang Wonyoung say, “Starship Entertainment, if you want to work, then work. If not, then get out.” This is a common slang phrase in China that has a negative connotation, with people stating it is considered rude.

In the subtitles of the video, the fan noted that they felt nervous making Jang Wonyoung say the phrase and even suspected that the idol saw through her lies. However, Jang Wonyoung did not call them out and instead thanked the fan.

At the end of the video, she stated, “When I lied to Queen Wonyoung and still received a ‘thank you’ in Chinese.”

While the fan did not see anything wrong with her actions, other Chinese fans quickly rushed to the comment section to criticize them. They stated that it appears Jang Wonyoung was aware the phrase was negative and that the idol’s smile looked forced and overall unhappy. Seeing her expression like that caused fans hearts to ache.

Others questioned why they felt the need to ask Jang Wonyoung to say such things and begged fans to be more normal and ask their idols regular questions. Many believed idols now needed interpreters with them so that they wouldn’t get fooled in such a way again.

Many Chinese netizens expressed their embarrassment over the situation and asked the fan to stop acting in a way that brings shame to Chinese fans.
