On Nov 1st, “POWER” topped the iTunes “Top Songs” chart in 15 countries/regions, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Vietnam. Simultaneously, it reached No.1 on major domestic music platforms like Melon, Genie, Bugs and VIBE. As of 2 p.m. on Nov 9th, eight days after the music video’s release, it recorded 20.82 million views, showcasing G-Dragon’s undeniable strength as an “icon of the era”.
G-Dragon shared that he incorporated the feelings he experienced amidst various rumors, including last year’s “drug allegations”, into the lyrics of “POWER”.
In the lyrics, he includes the lines “Others said to me it’s E-EASY / Shush all the Comments Ripples Attention-seekers… Forcefully criticize Spread a meme Talk blah blah shout out“, addressing the phenomenon of “witch hunts” and the silence that follows when the truth comes out.
Meanwhile, on tvN’s variety show “You Quiz on the Block”, G-Dragon described “POWER” as “a song about strength. For me, strength is music.” He added, “During the seven-year hiatus, I realized the great power of media. The song contains satire about the power of media and a message about harmonizing various forms of power.”
He also reflected on his life, saying, “I became a trainee at age six and debuted at 19. I only lived as Kwon Ji-yong for 4~5 years.”
