On the 271st episode of “You Quiz on the Block”, actress Go Hyun-jung emotionally confessed to her struggles in life. The episode of Go Hyun-jung’s return to a talk show after 15 years has already been generating buzz.
During the episode, Go Hyun-jung shared, “This opportunity is so precious to me. It’s a chance I might not have again,” and in a serious tone, added, “I’m going to live my life well and do my best.”
She also reflected on her career, “I’ve been thinking a lot about being an actress and about how I’ve been perceived. There were times when I was rude to the public, but that was never my intention.” She added, “People tell me I look young, but I’ve already got uneven skin and other signs of aging. I want to keep being an actress who doesn’t lose the spirit of the times.”
Go Hyun-jung then said, “There are many people who feel sorry for my children because of my presence on social media. I don’t want to burden them,” bringing attention to her emotions. She continued, “As a mother, I want to live well and repay the love I’ve received. I’ve never been able to express this seriously before,” before breaking into tears.
She couldn’t hold back her tears, “I don’t want to be ungrateful. I want to do well. Please help me. Please don’t judge me too harshly.”
Go Hyun-jung said, “I’m not insisting on staying young. I’m aging, but I want to keep going as Go Hyun-jung, born in 1971, who is from Korea. I just hope you don’t misunderstand me too much.”
Meanwhile, during the episode, Go Hyun-jung candidly shared that although she tries to approach juniors or reporters in a friendly way, her actions are sometimes perceived as overwhelming. She explained, “I’m extremely self-conscious. I don’t think people realize that I can be shy. For some reason, I’ve developed a strong image over time, as someone who speaks her mind and even says things like ‘Let’s date’ to someone I like. But that’s not me. I’m always trembling in fear.”
Yoo Jae-suk remarked, “It seems like you wouldn’t be afraid of anything, considering you’re someone so many people aspire to be like.”
Go Hyun-jung said, “No one wants to play the villain on a set, but when I see something that seems really unfair, I feel like I have to say something. I can’t stand seeing things that are wrong. I try to hold back, but when it gets too much, I end up saying, ‘Isn’t this wrong?’ Someone has to speak up.”
Later in the episode, Go Hyun-jung impressed fans with her sharp memory, recalling fan encounters shared on social media. However, she jokingly complained, “When I speak like this, I get comments like, ‘Stop clattering around’ or ‘Who does she think she is?’ These comments follow me everywhere.”
Go Hyun-jung also addressed a notorious incident from the press conference for SBS’s drama “Big Thing” (2010). At the time, she caused a stir by sternly asking for silence when the atmosphere grew noisy. She said “Tell the people in the back to quiet down. We’re doing an interview, and it’s loud. Someone’s eating or something. They’re not stopping. Please, senior Cha In-pyo, tell them to be quiet. We’re in the middle of an interview, and it’s disruptive”, taking matters into her own hands.
Reflecting on the incident, Go Hyun-jung explained, “We were taking photos with the reporters, and we were supposed to proceed with the interview, but we were the ones who invited them, so we couldn’t control the situation. At first, I quietly said ‘Shouldn’t it be quiet? Can someone stop them over there?’, but it seemed too obvious, so I felt like I had to speak up and said, ‘I can’t do the interview because of this noise.’ I ended up getting too concerned about it, and because no one else was taking charge, I decided I had to step in.” She added, “Honestly, I deserved to be scolded. I sincerely apologize.”
However, she also expressed some lingering frustration, “But why did they only air that part? It was too much. Still, I lived my life without saying much otherwise.”
Go Hyun-jung debuted in the entertainment industry as a contestant in the 1989 Miss Korea competition and gained fame through the drama “Sandglass”. She married Shinsegae Group’s Chairman Chung Yong-jin in 1995 and retired from the entertainment industry. They have one son and one daughter, but after 8 years and 6 months of marriage, they divorced in 2003. Following the divorce, she made a successful comeback in 2005 with the drama “Spring Day”. Her children grew up under the care of Chung Yong-jin.
