The Netflix series The Trunk teases a hidden mystery beyond the secretive marriage of Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin.
The Trunk is a mystery melodrama about two individuals entwined in a contract marriage and the secrets of the contract marriage service (that facilitated it) that come to light after a trunk surfaces on a lakeshore.
The trailer intensifies the mystery by hinting at a murder case surrounding a mysterious trunk found by a lakeside. After being recommended by his ex-wife, Lee Seo Yeon (Jung Yun Ha), Han Jeong Won enters into a contract marriage with No In Ji, who is part of NM (New Marriage), a company specializing in contract marriages. But soon after their marriage begins, a trunk puts Han Jeong Won at the center of a case. When asked by a detective, “How do you know the owner of the trunk?” Jeong Won replies, “My wife used to use it,” prompting the detective to ask, “Which wife?”
Jeong Won’s cutting remark, “What’s the point of a fake marriage?” is met with In Ji’s response, “Maybe they wish to hide their loneliness so desperately, they’re willing to cling to a facade.”
As the “secret marriage — where reality and illusion, resentment and desire, all intertwine” — becomes increasingly chaotic, Lee Seo Yeon, who had once insisted on the marriage, now begins to push for their divorce. In Ji’s sharp question to Seo Yeon, “Aren’t you here because you’re worried that the fake relationship might become real?”
Adding to the intrigue, a trunk, instead of a corpse, surfaces on a lakeshore raising questions about what secrets it might hold. The cryptic remark from an unidentified man who appears before Jeong Won— “Do you feel Noh In Ji has become your real wife or something?” — further heightens curiosity about the unfolding mystery.
The Trunk will premiere worldwide on Netflix on November 29. Watch the trailer here.
