“Hellbound 2”: New And Old Faces Returns , A Deeper Dive Into Dystopian Chaos

On October 21st, the production press conference for Netflix’s Hellbound Season 2 (written by Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Kyu-seok, directed by Yeon Sang-ho) was held at JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Director Yeon Sang-ho, writer Choi Kyu-seok, and actors Kim Hyun-joo, Kim Sung-cheol, Kim Shin-rok, Im Sung-jae, Moon So-ri, and Moon Geun-young were in attendance.

Hellbound tells the story of a supernatural phenomenon where people receive condemnation to hell from sudden appearances of hell’s messengers. Amid this chaos, the religious group New Truth Society rises to prominence, while others strive to uncover the truth behind these events. Season 2 continues as the world grows even more chaotic due to the ongoing hell-bound decrees. The story revolves around the sudden resurrection of New Truth Society Chairman Jung Jin-soo (Kim Sung-cheol) and Park Jeong-ja (Kim Shin-rok), and how Sodo’s lawyer Min Hye-jin (Kim Hyun-joo), the New Truth Society, and the Arrowhead group become entangled in new conflicts.

Released three years ago, Hellbound Season 1 showcased the pinnacle of dystopian world-building. It not only topped the 2021 Golden Tomato Best Horror Series category but also garnered 111 million viewing hours within ten days of its release. The series entered the TOP 10 in 93 countries, receiving acclaim from both global viewers and critics alike.

Director Yeon Sang-ho explained, “In Season 1, we portrayed people’s bewildered reactions to the sudden appearance of supernatural beings. In Season 2, we’ve incorporated content about people confronting the new reality of resurrection, with various individuals attempting to establish rules or principles amidst the chaos, fighting with determination.”

Regarding the potential success of Season 2, Director Yeon added, “This project started with the intriguing premise of hell’s messengers suddenly appearing and making decrees. It culminates with an even more fascinating topic of resurrection, which is why I think many people have been eagerly awaiting it. We’re not doing Season 2 just to repeat the same things. When creating a work, inspiration comes from the society we live in. We drew from Season 1 for Hellbound 2, and as a result, the story doesn’t go in circles but moves forward in new ways. Towards the end, something new and completely different from what has happened so far unfolds, making this world unpredictable in an organic way. That’s its charm.”
