On the December 17 episode of SBS Plus and E Channel’s joint variety show “Because I’m Solo”, Hwang Jung-eum opened up about her hidden struggles following her divorce.
During the episode, Sa Gang visited a psychological counseling center for insomnia treatment. She said, “I used to sleep very well. But recently, while I can fall asleep easily, I often wake up in the middle of the night. This kept happening, and it became exhausting and distressing. Even after sleeping, I don’t feel refreshed, and my focus is off, leaving me in a constant daze.” She shared that these symptoms appeared after her bereavement.
Chae Rim empathized, sharing her own struggles with insomnia, “I couldn’t sleep at all. After filming, I desperately needed some rest, but I just couldn’t sleep.” Recalling a particularly severe episode, she said, “One day, I had decided to just wash up and head out, but suddenly, I became alert and realized I was foaming at the mouth. I had mistaken foam cleanser for toothpaste while brushing my teeth.”
Hwang Jung-eum then revealed her own experience with sleeping aids. She admitted, “These days, I feel softer, more mellow. In the past, I never cried, but now I often do because there are so many good people around me. During my acting career, I never took sleeping pills, but in November 2023, my sleep quality deteriorated so much that I thought I’d go crazy. I relied on medication for a while then.” However, she reassured viewers, “These days, I sleep so well that I fall asleep as soon as my head touches the pillow.”
Meanwhile, Hwang Jung-eum married former professional golfer Lee Young-don in 2016, and the couple has two sons. After filing for divorce mediation in 2020, they briefly reconciled but announced in February this year that they were once again undergoing divorce proceedings.
Hwang Jung-eum had previously exposed Lee Young-don’s infidelity through SNS, sparking controversy. In the process, she publicly accused an unrelated non-celebrity woman of being the mistress, leading to defamation charges and further legal disputes.
