Actress Hwang Jung-eum has opened up about the unseen emotional struggles her family is facing following her divorce, revealing the heartbreaking feelings of her eldest son during a recent broadcast.
On the April 22 teaser for SBS Plus and E Channel’s Because I’m Solo, Hwang was shown spending a seemingly peaceful day at home with her two sons and two dogs. However, tensions surfaced when her younger son, Kang-sik, snatched an object from his older brother, Wang-sik, and even hit him. Despite the unfairness, eight-year-old Wang-sik remained silent, suppressing his emotions.

Concerned for her son’s well-being, Hwang decided to seek professional help. “Since Wang-sik keeps everything bottled up, I was afraid he might be hurting inside,” she explained as she took him to a psychological counseling center.
During the counseling session, Wang-sik finally voiced his pain, admitting, “I feel annoyed and uncomfortable at home. Kang-sik hits me a lot. What should I do about him?” His words exposed the bottled-up frustration he had been hiding.

After the session, the counselor gave Hwang a sobering insight: “Wang-sik wishes he could go back to when he was younger. He feels like ‘my presence in the house is so small.’” Upon hearing this, Hwang broke down in tears, confessing, “I realize now that I didn’t know how to handle things properly.”
Hwang Jung-eum Reflects on Divorce Decision
Hwang had previously opened up about her divorce during the March 4 broadcast of Because I’m Solo, explaining, “It’s simple — I wasn’t happy.” She shared how the once-positive energy she was known for had been eroded by negativity during her marriage, leading her to choose separation for the sake of her children: “I couldn’t let my children be exposed to that, so I chose divorce. No amount of apologies can fully express how sorry I am to them.”

Despite the challenges of life as a single mother, Hwang also emphasized the immeasurable joy her sons bring her: “The best thing I ever did in life was having Wang-sik and Kang-sik. There are good days and painful days, but because of them, I’m the happiest person in the world.”
Hwang Jung-eum married businessman and former professional golfer Lee Young-don in 2016. They welcomed two sons, born in 2017 and 2022. After a previous reconciliation in 2020, the couple separated again in February last year and are currently finalizing their divorce.

Hwang’s courageous openness is shedding light on the often hidden emotional toll divorce can take on children, stirring compassion and reflection among viewers.
