5 Heartwarming Female Friendships in K-dramas

Son Ye-jin, Jeon Mi-do and Kim Ji-hyun from Thirty-Nine

Female Friendships in K-Dramas - thirty nine

Thirty-Nine is a 2022 drama starring Son Ye-jin as Cha Mi-jo, Jeon Mi-do as Jeong Chan-young and Kim Ji-hyun as Jang Joo-hee. The twelve-episode series follows the three women at the cusp of their 30s and how they navigate their lives through a series of troubles before they turn 40.

The series is definitely a tear-jerker for obvious reasons but what warms our hearts further is the beautiful friendship that the three childhood friends share. Despite living their own lives, these three make an effort to constantly be there for each other, especially when one of them goes through a hard time. From their silly fights to emotional breakdowns, the trio bring comfort and solace through their display of true friendship.

Jung Eun-ji, Han Sun-hwa and Lee Sun-bin from Work Later, Drink Now

While the drama has many comedic moments, the episodes that stir the heart are the ones with Kang Ji-goo (Jung Eun-ji), Han Ji-yeon (Han Sun-hwa) and Ahn So-hee (Lee Sun-bin) being each other’s rock. The trio were constantly up for a drink after a long and tiring day, which usually led to them displaying their funny antics.

But as they helped each other through difficult times, one could see how they cared for each other deeply. They were also a representation of how three people with different personalities could still be great friends. Their friendship brought us to tears as well as rolling with laughter!

Jeon Do-yeon and Lee Bong-ryun from Crash Course in Romance

Crash Course in Romance follows Nam Haeng-seon (Jeon Do-yeon), a former national athlete turned ‘Banchan’ shop owner. With her brother and adopted daughter, she lived a quiet life until she ran into Choi Chi-yeol (Jung Kyung-ho), which was the start of their whirlwind romance.

But Nam Hang-seon and Kim Young-joo’s (Lee Bong-ryun) friendship was a beautiful journey as well. Being childhood friends, they had seen each other through many phases of life, including taking care of Haeng-seon’s young niece turned adopted daughter. Kim Young-joo was the type of person who left everything else to help Haeng-seon navigate through many storms. While their friendship didn’t get much screen time, they stole our hearts either way!

Im Yoon-ah, Go Won-hee and Kim Ga-eun from King The Land

While Cheon Sa-rang (Im Yoon-ah) and Gu-won’s (Lee Jun-ho) romance was the centre of attention amongst K-drama fans, Sa-rang’s friendship with Oh Pyung-hwa (Go Won-hee) and Kang Da-eul (Kim Ga-eun) was a show-stealer for us!

Sa-rang, Pyung-hwa and Da-eul worked in different industries but being long-time friends, they were always there for each other through ups and downs. They also shared natural chemistry during comedic scenes, leaving us laughing out loud at their antics. They also represent the ‘hustler’ generation of today- the young people who work hard to create a better life for themselves but would also take the time to hang out with their close-knit group.

Kim Se-jeong and Seol In-ah from Business Proposal

Business Proposal was a story of two people falling in love but it also focused on friendships and how they shaped the lives of the leads. Shin Ha-ri (Kim Se-jeong) and Jin Young-seo (Seol In-ah) came from different worlds but their friendship was as pure as it could get.

Their friendship was heartwarming to watch as they experienced love and began understanding new relationships around the same time. From throwing quips at each other to standing up for each other when someone insults them- one can say that they are each other’s ride or die!
