On Nov 11th, IU’s agency EDAM Entertainment stated, “We have filed complaints for serious cases that meet criminal requirements among illegal acts including: threats against the Artists, insults, defamation through the dissemination of false information, unfounded plagiarism allegations causing defamation, sexual harassment, distribution of obscene materials, death threats and privacy violations, creation and distribution of deepfake content (Al-synthesized photos and videos) and other illegal information distribution activities (hereinafter collectively referred to as ‘lllegal Acts’).“
IU’s side revealed, “To date, approximately one hundred eighty (180) individuals have been reported as defendants, and additional complaints are continuously being filed.”
To date, six cases of fine under summary prosecution, three cases of conditional suspensions of indictment with mandatory education, and one case of conditional suspension with probation supervision have been issued as rulings or dispositions. Among these, an individual who engaged in cyber bullying through defamation, sexual harassment and death threats against IU with unfounded false information received a fine of 3 million KRW, but the defendant has appealed this decision, and the result of a formal trial is awaited.
Notably, IU’s side disclosed that one of those responsible for defaming IU through an overseas server is believed to be IU’s middle school alumni.
The agency stated, “Among them, there is a person believed to be IU’s middle school alumni, who has been continuing to harass lU despite ongoing legal proceedings, and this situation is being addressed.”
Regarding an individual who spread false rumors (allegations of espionage) about lU, investigative authorities quickly identified the suspect and completed the initial investigation. IU’s agency said, “The investigation was prolonged as the suspect repeatedly refused multiple summonses from the investigative agency. The suspect’s case has now been forwarded to the prosecution and is awaiting disposition.“
They further declared, “The Company wants to reiterate that the Company has no intention of reaching settlements or offering leniency to any perpetrators of these illegal acts. The Company remains steadfast in commitment to holding malicious actors accountable and will continue to take decisive action. The Company urges individuals engaging in illegal online activities to desist immediately.”
