On the morning of December 29, a plane carrying 181 passengers crashed while attempting an emergency belly landing due to landing gear failure. The flight, Jeju Air 2216 from Bangkok, veered off the runway and collided with a wall. Firefighters and emergency personnel are currently conducting recovery operations.
A briefing by the fire department stated, “Out of 181 passengers, only 2 survivors have been identified; the rest are presumed deceased. We are fully committed to recovery efforts.”
According to the Fire Agency, the flight carried six crew members, 173 Korean passengers, and two Thai passengers.
Reports from the media outlet Chosun Ilbo revealed that many of the passengers shared the same surnames, indicating they were likely families. Among them were numerous young individuals born in the 2010s.
The flight was reportedly filled with travelers returning from Christmas trips to Bangkok, organized by travel agencies offering 3-night, 5-day packages.
A distraught individual waiting at the airport for family members said, “They left so joyfully for Christmas, and now this happens,” wiping away tears. Another individual, whose mother and five aunts were on board, expressed distress, stating, “I came to pick them up from the airport, but I can’t reach them. They all traveled together on the same flight.”
Alleged last messages sent by a passenger have since become a hot topic, with netizens expressing extreme sadness and condolences.
The ill-fated plane departed Bangkok Airport at 2:29 a.m. (KST) and was scheduled to land at Muan Airport at 8:59 a.m. However, during the landing attempt, the aircraft’s landing gear malfunctioned (likely due to either collision with a bird or lack of engine maintanence), causing it to skid off the runway and crash into the airport’s outer wall.
Officials from the South Jeolla Fire Headquarters briefed the families at the scene, stating, “Out of the 181 passengers, except for the two survivors, most are presumed dead. The collision with the wall caused passengers to be ejected from the aircraft, leaving little chance of survival.”
Further investigations into the cause of the accident and an official count of casualties are expected to follow.
