Jeju Air Under Fire for Disregard of Plane Crash Victims and Families

On December 29, a topic about the action of Jeju Air, the airline behind the recent tragic air crash with 120 confirmed deaths (so far), was published on the Korean forum “theqoo”, drawing massive attention.

The topic cited a post from SNS platform X (formerly Twitter), which exposed the action of Jeju Air. In particular, despite being the party directly responsible for the tragic incident, Jeju Air published the CEO’s apology on their website, immediately left the scene without even holding a briefing, and even said they wouldn’t take questions.

Meanwhile, firefighters and public officials, who are doing their best to provide relief at the scene, have to endure the bereaved families’ anger with no protection from the directly involved party.

As a result, netizens have expressed their anger, with some even comparing the situation to Itaewon Halloween Crowd Crush and commenting that the responsible party at the time also failed to properly address the issue and leaving the firefighters bearing all the brunt.

Below are some comments from netizens:

  • It was the same in Itaewon. All the people in charge went into hiding and let the firefighters do everything. What are they doing?
  • Jeju Air is really disgusting
  • The answer is to just boycott Jeju Air.
  • It’s so disgusting. Jeju Air’s crisis management is beyond a mess. It’s no different from a disaster. The basic theory is that the highest level is for the CEO to come out, bow his head, apologize, take responsibility, and bring a response manual. But he doesn’t know anything and says he’ll do it step by step, and then runs away.
  • My heart ached so much while watching the briefing…

Meanwhile, on the morning of December 29, at approximately 9:07 AM, a plane of Jeju Air carrying 181 people from Bangkok crashed while attempting to land at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, resulting in numerous casualties.

Most victims have since been confirmed to be families and young children returning from a Christmas trip in Bangkok, Thailand.
