Netflix’s upcoming animated film Lost in Starlight, set for release on May 30, boasts the high-profile voice casting of Kim Tae-ri and Hong Kyung. But what was meant to be a heartwarming sci-fi story about support across space is now facing a wave of backlash — all because of the voices behind the characters.
The promotional line, “Don’t forget someone out there in space is always cheering you on,” stirred initial interest. But once the teaser was released, Korean netizens voiced strong disappointment, particularly on communities like TheQoo.
Reactions include:
- ㅠㅠ Please use voice actors, I’m begging you…
- It’s so weird.
- I don’t know if it’s bad enough to make me angry, lol, but there aren’t even that many lines to begin with.
- If you think about it, wouldn’t hiring a voice actor be cheaper? Why… It doesn’t seem like it’s a project big enough to attract famous actors either.
- Isn’t the whole point of professional voice actors to do dubbing like that? Why aren’t they using professional voice actors? When you listen to audiobooks or drama CDs, there are so many voice actors who are really good at acting.
Many commenters pointed out that while Kim Tae-ri and Hong Kyung are talented live-action actors, their delivery in the teaser felt flat, lacking the vocal depth required to bring animated characters to life. Some even said the performances pulled them out of the immersive experience.

However, a few fans remained supportive, noting the film’s unique storyline and Netflix’s bold casting. Yet even they admitted, “The visuals are beautiful, but the voices need more weight.”
This isn’t the first time mainstream actors have faced criticism for voice acting roles. Fans continue to call for better respect for the craft, arguing that voice acting is a specialized skill that shouldn’t be treated as an afterthought — even for star-studded productions.
