Korean Food Master Lee Young-sook’s Earnings From “Culinary Class Wars” Got Seized By Court Amid Debt Controversy

Chef Lee Young-sook, the winner of “Korean Food War 2” and recently became popular through “Culinary Class Wars, has had her appearance fees seized by court order amid allegations of debt default.

On November 1st, the Nonsan branch of the Daejeon District Court approved creditor A’s application to seize and collect the appearance fees owed to Lee Young-sook by the production company of Netflix’s “Culinary Class Wars.”

Previously, on October 29th, controversy erupted when allegations surfaced that Lee Young-sook had borrowed 100 million won (roughly $77,000 USD) and hadn’t repaid it for 14 years, in what has become known as a “debt investment” case.

In an interview with YTN star, creditor A claimed, “Lee Young-sook borrowed 100 million won from my father in April 2010 and hasn’t repaid it to this day,” adding, “We won a loan claim lawsuit in May 2012, but still haven’t received the money.”

According to A, they were able to recover approximately 42 million won (around $32,300 USD) through an auction related to Lee Young-sook’s debt. However, they lamented, “Because Lee Young-sook failed to fulfill another debt obligation for which my father was a joint guarantor, we had to use the recovered amount plus an additional 6 million won ($4,600 USD), totaling about 48 million won ($36,900 USD), to repay Lee Young-sook’s other debt instead.”
