South Korea is known as the “mecca” of plastic surgery and has produced numerous reality shows on the subject, such as “Let Me In” and “Let Beauty”. These programs aim to help individuals with facial deformities undergo medical procedures to “reinvent” their appearance, boosting their confidence and improving their quality of life.

However, a new plastic surgery show titled “Make Me Girl” has sparked controversy due to its questionable selection of participants and unnatural post-surgery results. The show, hosted by entertainer Eom Ji-yoon, actress Lee Yu-ri, and dancer Monika, is said to encourage unnecessary cosmetic procedures for participants who did not have significant facial flaws to begin with. This has led to concerns about the increasing pressure on young people to conform to unrealistic beauty standards.
Furthermore, some viewers have pointed out that the surgical outcomes on the show appear overly artificial, particularly regarding nose surgeries, making participants look less natural rather than enhancing their features.

So far, a netizen shared before-and-after images of the participants on a Korean forum with the caption, “Plastic surgery shows like ‘Make Me Girl’ are truly concerning. I still remember ‘Let Me In’ for helping people with severe jaw misalignment or rare facial conditions achieve better appearances. But ‘Make Me Girl’ is the opposite. The post-surgery results are truly shocking.”
The discussion quickly gained traction online, with comments such as belo:
- They all looked fine before surgery.
- They looked completely normal.
- South Korea has a serious problem with appearance-based standards.
- I thought the purpose of these shows was to help people with severe conditions achieve a better look. But this seems to have gone in the wrong direction
- This show has gone overboard with giving participants Pinocchio noses.
The backlash against “Make Me Girl” has reignited discussions about the ethics of reality TV programs centered on plastic surgery and their potential role in promoting unhealthy beauty ideals. As debates continue, many are questioning whether such shows should be held more accountable for their influence on public perception of beauty.
