Among the four East Asian countries – South Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan – South Korea has the highest obesity rate among children and adolescents.

A joint research team led by Professor Hong Yong-hee from the Pediatrics Department at Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital analyzed data from the “NCD Risk Factors Collaboration” to compare obesity rates in children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 in East Asia from 2010 to 2022.

The study found that South Korean teenagers had the highest rates of obesity and overweight rates among the four countries in 2022. About 43% of boys and 24.6% of girls were overweight or obese.

The popular foods among kids these days are basically calorie bombs.

-Childhood obesity is just like a form of abuse…

-If 43% is considered obese, doesn’t that mean almost half of teenage boys?

-Huh, but is it really that bad…? I didn’t think it was that bad.

-It’s not just what they eat, but they probably sit around too much…

-Exactly, kids today travel everywhere by car. They don’t walk much, and they don’t even have PE classes.

-Do you really think that’s the only reason? It’s also because kids these days don’t move enough.

-Working out is more important than eating. They don’t move, so that’s why they get fat.

-Do you really think it’s because of Malatang and Tanghulu? We had pizza and hamburgers back in our day too.

-In general, kids these days are getting chubbier. Childhood obesity will lead to health issues later, so they need to exercise.

-They should be focused on exercising, not studying.

-I once saw an article saying obesity was more common among the poor in the West. I feel like we’re heading in the same direction in Korea, though. I haven’t looked at the stats, but it seems to be true in my neighborhood.

-Most of them will probably end up obese when they grow up…ㅜㅜ
