On June 9, Chinese media outlet Sohu revealed that a Beijing-based lawyer confirmed former EXO member, Kris Wu‘s mother was sentenced for defrauding the Chinese tax system of approximately 300 million yuan (over $41.7 million USD). This discovery came after authorities scrutinized Kris Wu’s personal company during the fallout from his high-profile criminal case.

As the head of his management office during his entertainment career, Wu Xiuqin was accused of overseeing financial misdeeds while acting as her son’s agent. The investigation reportedly led to her arrest, marking a significant twist in the ongoing saga.
Authorities from Beijing’s Second Tax Inspection Bureau also imposed a 600 million yuan fine (approx. $83.4 million USD) on Kris Wu for tax evasion, including overdue fees and penalties. However, he has allegedly been unable to pay the full amount, resulting in an extension of his prison sentence.

According to reports, Kris Wu will be deported to Canada after completing over 13 years of incarceration in China. He is also facing separate legal troubles in Canada, where he could stand trial for alleged sexual assault involving a minor, a charge that could lead to chemical castration under Canadian law.

Kris Wu’s fall from grace began in 2021 when influencer Du Meizhu publicly accused him of sexual assault. Police later confirmed multiple instances where Wu and his associates hosted alcohol-fueled parties and sexually assaulted intoxicated women, including three confirmed cases from late 2020.
In his prime, Kris Wu was one of China’s top celebrities, starring in blockbuster films like Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back, Mr. Six, and Never Gone, as well as Hollywood’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage. He commanded the highest fees in the Chinese entertainment industry, reportedly earning $12.3 million USD for just 20 days of filming the variety show 72 Floors of Mystery in 2017.
Despite efforts by his mother to liquidate his assets and salvage his career, Wu’s legacy is now marred by legal scandals and public condemnation, marking one of the most dramatic downfalls in modern Asian pop culture.
