On the afternoon of December 18, a press conference for tvN’s new Saturday-Sunday drama “When the Stars Gossip” was held at The Saint Grand Ballroom in Sindorim, Guro-gu, Seoul. Attendees included director Park Shin-woo and cast members Lee Min-ho, Gong Hyo-jin, Oh Jung-se and Han Ji-eun.
“When the Stars Gossip” is a drama depicting life outside Earth, focusing on Eve (played by Gong Hyo-jin), the boss of a zero-gravity space station, and Gong Ryong (played by Lee Min-ho), an uninvited guest with a secret mission.
The pairing of Lee Min-ho and Gong Hyo-jin has been a hot topic even before the drama’s release. Regarding this collaboration, Lee Min-ho remarked, “It feels like we met later than we should have. It was such a great experience to work with her, to lock eyes and breathe together in a place without air.”
He added, “The director and the staff also played a big part. The set often presented situations we had never encountered before. Having a partner you can lean on emotionally and mentally is incredibly valuable. Gong Hyo-jin is such a loving and inherently considerate and respectful person. Just being with her made me feel at ease and helped me perform beyond 100% of my potential. I was truly happy.”
Gong Hyo-jin also shared her impressions, “Lee Min-ho doesn’t seem like someone who mingles a lot. I haven’t met many actors who are close to him. I thought he might be prickly like his on-screen characters, but I realized he’s someone who thinks deeply about everything. That was new to me. He thinks so much that it keeps him up at night. You’d think he’s easygoing, but he’s not. He contemplates and reflects deeply. He often views the work from perspectives I hadn’t considered, which made me curious and ask, ‘Really?’“
She continued, “He’s a smart person. Not only as an actor, but also in how he approaches creating a work. I saw him as a mature actor who thinks a lot about the process. During filming, there were scenes with just the three of us—me, Lee Min-ho and foreign actor Alex. We worked on one starting scene for 2, 3 months. We kept wondering when Oh Jung-se would join us, saying, ‘Please bring him quickly; we’re so lonely.’ Those three-person scenes were tough. Adapting to zero-gravity acting and doing it naturally was challenging, and I kept questioning, ‘Am I doing this right?’“
She added, “During that time, I would often gather in the morning with Lee Min-ho and the director, asking, ‘What should we do today?’ It felt like we were tackling an impossible task, but it built camaraderie among us—me, Lee Min-ho, the director and Alex. Later cast members benefited from the groundwork we laid, and I remember teaching them, saying, ‘This is not how you do it.’ Oh Jung-se couldn’t sit still and kept swaying like he was underwater. We shared a lot of tips and built the work together. Min-ho was a great source of support.” She concluded “We had camaraderie, but Lee Min-ho also felt like a younger brother who doesn’t listen. I say this because he’s incredibly cute. I nagged him a lot“, causing laughter.
Meanwhile, “When the Stars Gossip” will premiere on January 4, 2025 at 9:20 PM.
