Maestra Episode 1 Recap

The episode kicks off with Se-eum employing an unorthodox method, threatening a drunk concertmaster with a gun to ensure his participation in her show. The scene transitions to a successful orchestra concert where Se-eum and the concertmaster share a playful and peaceful farewell. Meanwhile, rich businessman Jeong-jae faces setbacks as his horse Thunder fails in a race, compounded by the news of Cha Se-eum’s return to South Korea after two decades.

At Hanphil Music Centre, turmoil brews as two senior music conductors clash with CEO Sang-do over Se-eum’s appointment as the new conductor. The decision sparks dissatisfaction among orchestra members, some of whom dislike having a woman as their conductor. Se-eum arrives a day earlier than expected, surprising the orchestra with her arrival. Despite initial resistance, she impresses them by enhancing their performance of the Mission Impossible theme.

Se-eum’s husband, Kim Pil, picks her up, and they go to their house. The couple’s reunion reveals the absence of children in their lives, a source of silent sadness for Kim Pil. Later that evening, one orchestra member, Luna, decides to quit her job to focus entirely on Hanphil’s performance. She was saving money to study in the USA under Se-eum but changes her plans upon Se-eum’s return.

The next day, Se-eum interacts with Luna and later confronts Jae-man, the concertmaster and her former teacher. She urges him to leave the orchestra due to his deteriorating skills, but he resists, leading to a heated argument. During practice, Se-eum decides to make Luna the concertmaster, causing uproar among the members who resist having a young girl lead the team. The dissenting members leave, leaving only a handful behind.

Sang-do attempts to mediate, but Se-eum stands firm on her decision. Jae-man quits the orchestra, and Sang-do challenges Se-eum to increase attendance by 50% within three months. Se-eum confidently raises the stakes, promising 95% attendance or her departure from the centre. That night, Se-eum revisits her traumatic past when her mother tried to kill her due to a mental condition. The impact of this trauma still affects Se-eum’s emotional well-being.

Jeong-jae, a wealthy businessman, decides to invest in a new game and expresses his intentions to meet Se-eum. Meanwhile, Se-eum begins rehearsals, facing resistance from members who had left. Sang-do tries to appease them, but Se-eum remains resolute, vowing to recruit new members if the disgruntled ones don’t return. The tension escalates when members lock themselves in the rehearsal room, and Se-eum breaks through to assert her authority.

Despite disruptions caused by Jeong-jae, Se-eum continues the practice. Jeong-jae’s arrival intensifies the conflict, culminating in a face-off between him and Se-eum. The episode concludes with heightened suspense as the orchestra grapples with internal conflicts, setting the stage for a compelling narrative.
