MEOVV Unveils First EP MY EYES OPEN VVIDE, Embracing Growth and Versatile Cat Charm

On the afternoon of May 12, a media showcase for MEOVV’s first EP, MY EYES OPEN VVIDE, was held at SBS Prism Tower in Mapo-gu, Seoul.

Having made a bold debut with the single MEOW and followed up with TOXIC, MEOVV now ventures into a deeper and broader musical world with their first EP, MY EYES OPEN VVIDE. Before officially promoting the EP, MEOVV connected with fans through the pre-release track HANDS UP, which topped music charts and marked a joyful start.

When asked about the pressure of following the success of the pre-release track, Narin expressed heartfelt gratitude, “We’re thrilled that fans loved ‘HANDS UP,’ which we prepared with so much affection. The song embodies our determination to forge our own path fearlessly, and winning first place makes it even more meaningful. We’re so thankful to our fans.”

Previously releasing singles, MEOVV now presents a cohesive narrative through this EP, vividly showcasing their perspective and inner world while hinting at the direction of their musical evolution.

One of MEOVV‘s goals as a team is to perform every song in their unique style while enjoying the stage. Regarding the new tracks, Anna shared, “The three new songs were prepared since our trainee days. I’m so happy to return with songs filled with love. I hope fans will love the new tracks too.”

Ella, who described the busy preparation period, added, “Through filming, I learned a lot about myself and how to improve. I’m excited to show our potential through this promotion.”

Known as a ‘Teddy girl group,’ MEOVV stands out with THEBLACKLABEL’s distinctive production style, highlighting each member’s unique charm and artistry. When asked about advice from producer Teddy, Anna revealed, “Teddy always tells us to do as much as we want during recordings or music video shoots to achieve the best results. We’re grateful for the opportunities he’s given us.”

Narin reflected, “This comeback involved many firsts, and I discovered new sides of myself. That’s why I’m so attached to this album, and it’ll stay with me for a long time. I’m excited to show diverse music and charm, and I want to get closer to our fans through more interactions.”

The EP’s title track, DROP TOP, is a stylish portrayal of confidently facing the world. Starting with a calm mood and transitioning into an upbeat pop track infused with rock elements, it’s both engaging and dynamic. Member Gawon contributed to the lyrics, adding depth to the song.

Gawon shared, “‘DROP TOP’ was the first song we recorded as trainees, making it the one we’ve been with the longest. Freedom is at its core. It’s about cherishing and enjoying the present moment. I wrote the lyrics thinking of those moments, especially the precious times with the members.”

Gawon also contributed to the lyrics of LIT RIGHT NOW, alongside Narin. Gawon explained, “We wrote it during our trainee days with Narin, Teddy, and producer 24. It wasn’t about specific keywords but rather inspiration from the vibe. I’m shy, so writing lyrics in front of others was daunting, but Narin’s presence and the relaxed atmosphere made it easier.”

Narin described LIT RIGHT NOW,_ “It is a song that feels calming and joyful, evoking the excitement of traveling. I wanted the lyrics to capture that free-spirited vibe. At the time, I dreamed of becoming a cool artist who makes the music I love, and that’s reflected in the song.”_

With their first EP, MY EYES OPEN VVIDE, MEOVV is ready to soar, transitioning from chic black cats to vibrant, multifaceted felines. Narin shared their ambition, “We want to show a colorful array of charms, like a ‘versatile cat.’ We aim to tackle various concepts and showcase our versatility in both music and performance.”

Previously, MEOVV’s debut has faced mounting challenges since the release of their single MEOW on September 6, 2024, which drew mixed reactions for its outdated concept and lack of originality, with critics noting its resemblance to earlier K-pop styles.

Adding to concerns, fans have criticized the group’s limited promotional activities, as MEOVV has made only a handful of music show appearances since debuting. This has sparked comparisons to BLACKPINK’s minimal promotion strategy, with some suggesting that The Black Label is attempting to replicate a similar approach. However, many fans argue that such a strategy is ill-suited for a rookie group still striving to build a solid fanbase and establish its presence in the fiercely competitive K-pop industry.
