As they enter their 10th year, TWICE, JYP’s third-generation girl group, remains highly active with frequent comebacks and global tours. In addition to group activities, JYP has also promoted solo projects and sub-units to fully utilize the members’ potential. Although their fame has declined compared to their golden era, TWICE is still a top revenue generator for the company.
In Japan, TWICE remains one of the most popular K-pop girl groups. Capitalizing on this, JYP formed the sub-unit MiSaMo with three Japanese members—Mina, Momo, and Sana—who are also fan favorites. MiSaMo primarily promotes in Japan and recently made a comeback with their second Japanese mini-album, Haute Couture, featuring the songs “New Look” and “Identity.”
However, a recent performance of “New Look” sparked heated controversy. During a key part of the choreography, the three TWICE members were seen lying under male dancers and performing suggestive moves. Some fans found this segment odd and uncomfortable, stating that it clashed with the song’s concept of embracing individuality and pursuing one’s dreams. The provocative nature of the dance drew criticism, especially from fans in China, who demanded a change in the choreography. Sana’s fans even sent a protest truck to JYP’s headquarters.
Fans argue that the dance does not match the elegant image MiSaMo intended to project with New Look and Haute Couture. While TWICE has gradually adopted a more mature and daring image over the years, especially during their “Ready To Be” world tour, not all choreography is well-received. Supporters encourage the group’s evolution but believe there must be a balance between being sexy and tasteful.
