On January 9, a press conference for MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama “Motel California” (written by Lee Seo-yoon, directed by Kim Hyung-min) was held at the MBC Golden Mouse Hall in Sangam, Mapo-gu, Seoul. The event was attended by director Kim Hyung-min and cast members Lee Se-young, Na In-woo, Choi Min-soo, Kim Tae-hyung and Choi Hee-jin.
This marked Na In-woo’s first official public appearance since being embroiled in the military exemption controversy.
Recently, it was revealed that Na In-woo had been exempted from military service. He had been classified as “Grade 4” during his physical examination, making him eligible for service as a public service worker. While waiting for his enlistment and assignment notice, three years passed without a summons from the Military Manpower Administration, ultimately leading to his exemption.
Regarding this, his agency Hanada Company stated last month, “It is true that Na In-woo received a ‘Grade 4’ designation and was waiting for enlistment and placement as a public service worker when the Military Manpower Administration exempted him from service. As this was a decision by the Military Manpower Administration, there is nothing further to add.” However, the agency did not disclose the specific reason behind the Grade 4 designation.
When asked about the controversy during the press conference, Na In-woo explained, “The news (about my military exemption) broke while we were filming ‘Motel California’. I was caught off guard and only learned about it after filming ended late at night. Because this is a sensitive issue, I had to make a quick decision, and I chose to remain silent.“
He continued, “I believe many people like me for my bright, energetic and positive image. I didn’t want to show a struggling or painful side of myself, so I tried to stay upbeat and present myself in that way.”
Na In-woo added, “While I cannot disclose the details of my personal medical condition, I am speaking candidly now in hopes that people will accept me as I am.”
Meanwhile, “Motel California” is a first love remodeling romance drama set in a rural area about a woman who was born and raised in a motel and reunites with her first love in her hometown she ran away from 12 years ago. The work will premiere on January 10 at 9:50 PM.
