After nearly a month of dominating charts across Asia, “When Life Gives You Tangerines” aired its final four episodes on February 28 and social media hasn’t stopped crying since.
Two moments, in particular, have taken over online discussions: the long-awaited wedding of Geum-myeong (played by IU) and the emotional farewell of Gwan-sik.

The Wedding Scene of Geum-myeong
The wedding scene of Geum-myeong quickly became a hot topic, but it was Gwan-sik’s final night that truly shattered viewers. After witnessing Ae-soon’s dream of publishing her poetry come true, he lies beside her, gently reassuring her and delivering his final words, “Whenever Ae-soon cries, it feels like I’m about to leave this world. If you cry, I won’t be able to fly away.”

Moments later, Gwan-sik collapses, and the family rushes him to the hospital. The emotional weight crashes in when Geum-myeong says, “The last face our father saw of us… was one in pain.”
Gwan-sik’s Farewell & The Aftermath
As many predicted from the trailer, Gwan-sik departs in the final episode after 50 years of standing by his beloved Ae-soon. However, unlike the fates of Ae-soon’s other loved ones, Gwan-sik’s passing doesn’t come from the sea but in a slightly more peaceful manner.

The heartbreaking hospital scene and the devastated reactions of the remaining family members made it almost unbearable for many viewers.
In the end, Ae-soon remains in their home, quietly waiting for her daughter’s visits. Flashbacks of the couple’s younger days in the canola fields, full of peace and golden light, play out beautifully, matching the final episode’s title: “Congratulations to Mom and Dad for Living a Full Life.”
Still, even that serene ending couldn’t stop viewers from bawling. As soon as the episode aired, emotional clips of Gwan-sik and Ae-soon went viral across platforms, with viewers confessing they were sobbing uncontrollably. Some even admitted they skipped the ending entirely to spare their hearts.
- Instead of ending with the couple holding hands watching their grandchildren, the writer really said “Let’s make them cry one more time.”
- Too tired to cry anymore. I’ll stop at Geum-myeong’s wedding. That’s enough for my heart.
- Watched this at work, cried secretly, and my coworkers thought I was sick.
- Writer-nim, how could you be this cruel?
- If I’m crying just from the pictures, how can I survive the full episode?
- I cried a whole river.
