Speaking at the “Hanwha General Insurance X FOL:IN Talk Concert – Women Who Became a Genre” on December 6, Min Hee-jin discussed her philosophy of breaking trends and creating them instead. She emphasized the importance of confidence and a level of perfection so refined that it leaves no room for criticism.
Highlighting the meticulous planning behind “Blue Coral Reef,” Min Hee-jin explained, “The day before the Tokyo Dome fan meeting, during Hanni’s rehearsal, it became clear that the outfit initially selected didn’t match the performance. I directed the team to find a Saint James-style striped shirt and a white skirt. For the shoes, I felt kitten heels would be more appropriate than stilettos, but we didn’t have any, so we searched vintage shops and found a pair with a slightly chunky heel.”
She added, “For those familiar with the song’s image, the details would be noticeable, and they’d assess it closely. It’s about paying attention to the details so there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”
During NewJeans’ “Bunnies Camp 2024 Tokyo Dome” concert held on June 26–27, “Blue Coral Reef” stood out as one of the most memorable highlights. Hanni, a K-pop idol with dual Vietnamese-Australian citizenship, recreated the atmosphere of the 1980s hit with remarkable fidelity, delivering a performance that felt like a snapshot from that era. Her Saint James-inspired striped T-shirt worn on the first day also became a topic of discussion. Notably, Min Hee-jin was responsible for selecting the song.
Hanni’s cover created a sensation in Japan not only because of the original song and singer’s popularity but also due to her ability to perfectly recreate the nostalgic emotions tied to the song. The performance even touched the heart of a cancer patient, who shared that it gave them encouragement and inspiration in their healing journey.
This talk marked Min Hee-jin’s first public appearance after her resignation from HYBE, the parent company of ADOR, drawing significant attention.
