On December 19, Judge Hong Eun-sook of the Incheon District Court’s Criminal Division 4 sentenced A (the nightclub manager) to 3 years and 6 months in prison for blackmailing the late actor Lee Sun-kyun. B, a former actress indicted on the same charges, was sentenced to 4 years and 2 months.
The court stated, “A independently determined the amount to demand from the victim to be 300 million won. It is difficult to accept A’s claim that B directed or gaslighted the blackmail.” The court added, “The victim, a well-known actor, likely experienced fear and severe psychological distress due to A’s crime. B also directly threatened the victim, exacerbating the mental anguish.”
The court further noted, “After the victim’s drug investigation became public knowledge, he took his own life. Even if other factors contributed, the defendants’ blackmail undeniably played a role in the victim’s death.”
However, the court considered mitigating factors, stating, “A was also a victim of B’s threats, which influenced A’s criminal actions to some extent. B has largely admitted to wrongdoing, shown remorse, and has minor children to support.”
Previously, prosecutors had sought a seven-year prison sentence for both A and B during a trial held on the 25th of last month. A was arrested and indicted last September for extorting 300 million won from Lee Sun-kyun over a phone call. Police investigations later revealed that B was the hacker who had threatened A at the time.
