Goo Hye-sun gained immense popularity not only in Korea but also in other Asian countries like China and Japan thanks to her performance in “Boys Over Flowers”.
In 2021, Goo Hye-sun appeared on KBS2’s “Soo-mi’s Mountain Cabin” and made headlines after Kim Soo-mi bluntly remarked, “You’re so picky and sensitive.“
During the show, Goo Hye-sun opened up about the struggles she faced as an actress, saying, “I hated the so-called ‘actress manual’. I don’t get hurt easily, and I tend to forget and recover quickly. But I couldn’t eat properly during shoots, and for 13 years, I took sleeping pills because I forgot how to sleep.”
Kim Soo-mi, however, responded with her trademark honesty, “You say you forget and move on quickly, but the fact that you couldn’t eat a single meal during filming shows you’re very picky.”
When Goo Hye-sun admitted she didn’t have many friends, Kim Soo-mi quipped “You look like someone who wouldn’t have friends. You’ve got quite the personality and sensitivity”, delivering her usual straightforward yet humorous comments.
Kim Soo-mi went even further, rejecting a hypothetical film offer from Goo Hye-sun before it was even made. She said, “Even if you offered me a ton of money, I wouldn’t act in a film you’re directing. You’re too sensitive and picky; I wouldn’t want to.”
Goo Hye-sun tried to explain, “I’m a reasonable person in my own way. If someone is part of my team, I wouldn’t demand anything from them.” However, Kim Soo-mi countered, “A movie set has 70~80 staff members, and they can’t all be ‘your people’. If you directed, I feel like we’d end up fighting.”
Despite her blunt remarks, Kim Soo-mi showed affection for Goo Hye-sun, who said she has been dating steadily since her divorce, “Then you’re living a happy life. It’s a wonderful age. I hope your love blossoms beautifully. Make sure to send me a wedding invitation.”
Goo Hye-sun has continued to expand her career as a film director, even serving as a jury member for the feature competition at the 22nd Bucheon International Animation Festival.
Kim Soo-mi, who offered these heartfelt yet candid words of advice, recently passed away, leaving many fans grieving her loss. Goo Hye-sun is undoubtedly among those who feel her absence deeply.
