Major broadcasting networks have canceled variety shows and year-end award ceremonies, replacing them with emergency news coverage.
Singer Jang Yoon-jeong posted on her account on Dec 29th, “This is such a heartbreaking accident. May the deceased rest in peace.” Her husband Do Kyung-wan also expressed his grief, writing, “It’s a deeply saddening weekend and year-end. May the deceased rest in peace.”
Broadcaster Jang Sung-kyu shared a black image on his account, writing, “Unbelievable. I hope no further casualties occur.” Broadcaster Choi Hee wrote, “I just saw the news. It’s shocking and heartbreaking. I sincerely pray that there aren’t many casualties and offer my deepest condolences.”
Singer Tei posted “This is devastating… #RestInPeace” and actor Choi Seung-kyung shared, “Unbelievable. May the deceased rest in peace.” Broadcaster Kim Na-young expressed her sorrow by sharing a screenshot of the news and adding a praying emoji.
Comedian Kim Ji-min wrote, “An unimaginable tragedy has occurred. May the deceased rest in peace. I sincerely hope for more survivors.” Seo Ha-yan, the wife of singer Lim Chang-jung, stated, “May they rest peacefully in heaven. My deepest condolences.”
Travel YouTuber Pani Bottle announced the postponement of his final video from a trip to the Philippines via his channel’s community section. He wrote, “I woke up this morning to the tragic news of the Muan International Airport accident. As someone who frequently flies, I can’t express how devastated I feel. I pray for the repose of the victims and hope the situation is resolved swiftly.”
Broadcasting networks have suspended regular programming to focus on emergency news coverage. MBC canceled “Let’s Go Video Travel” and “King of Mask Singer”, replacing them with special news reports. The 2024 MBC Entertainment Awards, initially planned to proceed with only the photo time canceled, has now been fully suspended, with the time slot allocated for news coverage instead.
SBS canceled “Animal Farm” and suspended broadcasts of “Inkigayo”, “Running Man” and “My Little Old Boy” to prioritize emergency news. JTBC also canceled the third episode of “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator” at 9 PM for similar reasons. It also canceled two programs featuring top stars, including “Newsroom” with Hyun Bin and “Chef & My Fridge” with Song Joong Ki.
KBS announced extensive cancellations, stating in an official release, “In response to the Muan Airport plane crash that occurred this morning, KBS will switch to emergency broadcasting on 1TV and suspend weekend entertainment programming on 2TV.”
KBS 1TV began emergency news coverage at 9:58 AM and will operate in 24-hour emergency broadcasting mode. On KBS 2TV, regular weekend entertainment shows have been replaced with programs like “The Secret of Life and Death” and “Families of Love”. As a result, shows such as “Boss in the Mirror”, “2 Days & 1 Night”, “The Entertainer” and “Gag Concert” have been canceled.
A KBS programming official explained, “To ensure the rapid delivery of critical information during a national disaster and out of respect for public sentiment, we have canceled entertainment and comedy programming.”
Some stars, unable to cancel their schedules, expressed their condolences through subdued gestures. On the afternoon of December 29, the cast and crew of Harbin held a promotional event in Seoul. The actors and director dressed in black and maintained solemn expressions. BABYMONSTER and SEVENTEEN were seen at the airport wearing black outfits and subdued expressions as they headed abroad for their schedules.
Images showed Hyun Bin wearing black with a serious expression, while BABYMONSTER and SEVENTEEN were also dressed in black for their travel.
Meanwhile, at approximately 9:03 AM on Dec 29th, a Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 from Bangkok attempted to land at Muan International Airport but crashed, striking nearby structures and breaking apart. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, carrying 175 passengers (173 Koreans and two Thais) and six crew members, was engulfed in flames following the crash.
By 9:46 AM, firefighters had extinguished the initial fire and rescued two injured crew members from the tail section of the aircraft. However, most of the passengers are presumed to have perished. Fire and aviation authorities are continuing rescue operations, casualty verification and investigations into the exact cause of the accident.
