Korean netizens are revisiting the controversial “Burning Sun” scandal after a resurfaced news article revealed that President Yoon Suk-yeol oversaw the initial investigation as the head of the 3rd Criminal Division at the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office.
The article, originally published during the scandal’s early stages, disclosed that the high-profile case had been assigned to Yoon Suk-yeol’s division. This revelation has ignited a wave of public discourse, with many netizens raising questions about his involvement and decisions during the investigation.
While the scandal centered on allegations of corruption, drug use, and abuse linked to the nightclub Burning Sun was one of the most infamous in South Korea’s entertainment and legal history, the new attention on Yoon Suk-yeol’s role has added another layer to the ongoing debate about the handling of the case.
Below are K-netizens’ responses to this revelation:
- Right, that’s why if you look at old posts on Instiz, there were some praise posts.
- Huh..? It fizzled out in the end, so why were there praise posts..?
- At the time, people were posting things like, ‘He’s the prosecutor in charge of the Choi Soon-sil Gate investigation, so please expose everything. We believe in you’ — all without even knowing who he really was.
- This topic resurfaced once before, but it was on Twitter, not here.
- Meanwhile, people kept saying Yoon Suk-yeol had no criminal record or whatever. It’s hilarious. Why wouldn’t he have one?
- They should’ve asked for a heavier sentence. His fans are still acting up, and he’s still going abroad and mentioning BB (Big Bang), which seriously pisses me off.
- No wonder it all ended in such a wishy-washy way, lol.
On December 14, Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached by the National Assembly with 204 out of 300 votes in favor, making him the third president in South Korean history to face impeachment. Yoon Suk-yeol was immediately suspended from his duties, and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo assumed the role of acting president until the Constitutional Court delivers its final ruling.
Reuters describes Han Duck-soo as one of the few officials in South Korea with “a diverse career that transcends partisan boundaries.” He has served under both liberal and conservative presidents. With a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard, Han Duck-soo’s expertise in economics, trade, and diplomacy, along with his reputation for reasonableness, a calm demeanor, and diligence, has made him a prominent figure frequently mentioned in South Korean politics.
