“Queen Woo” Named as “Worst OTT Series of 2024” Despite 30 Billion Won Budget

Tving’s epic historical drama “Queen Woo” has been selected as the worst OTT series of 2024. According to a survey conducted by TV Daily from December 17 to 26, which involved 100 entertainment industry professionals and entertainment journalists, “Queen Woo” topped the rankings with 24 votes.

The series, with a production budget of approximately 30 billion won, boasted an impressive lineup of actors, including Jeon Jong-seo, Kim Mu-yeol, Ji Chang-wook, Jeong Yu-mi, and Lee Soo-hyuk. The drama, centered on the struggle of Woo Hee (or Queen Woo), who must crown a new king within 24 hours after the sudden death of the king, aimed to deliver a thrilling action-packed historical narrative. However, it sparked controversy due to excessive nudity, sexual scenes, and provocative plot developments.

Actress Jeong Yu-mi, who performed bold nudity in the series, mentioned in an August press conference that, while it was a challenging experience for her, she believed the scenes were essential for maintaining the tension in the story. However, despite her explanation, the controversy surrounding the explicit content of the drama did not subside easily.

Industry professionals criticized the series for its overtly sexual content. One industry insider remarked, “The excessive sexual scenes interfere with the development of the story,” while another said, “Though it may have been an attempt at historical accuracy, the explicit scenes felt awkward and diminished the overall quality of the work.”

A journalist commented, “‘Game of Thrones’ may have been the intended inspiration, but the excessive nudity and provocative scenes are poorly executed, making it a well-packaged form of pornography.” Another reporter harshly criticized the series as a “low-grade 30 billion-won pornography.”

The performances of the cast were also criticized, particularly the historical acting of lead actress Jeon Jong-seo, with some viewers finding her acting awkward and pointing out issues with her pronunciation.

Following “Queen Woo,” the second spot went to Netflix’s “Goodbye Earth” (18 votes), while the third spot was shared between Netflix’s “Chicken Nugget” and “Sweet Home Season 3” (17 votes each). The fourth place went to Netflix’s “Gyeongseong Creature Season 2” (13 votes), and the fifth place went to Netflix’s “The Eight Show” (12 votes). Other notable mentions include Disney+’s “Red Swan” (10 votes), Netflix’s “Hierarchy” (9 votes), Netflix’s “Hellbound Season 2” (6 votes), and Netflix’s “Trunk” (5 votes), with Disney+’s “Uncle Samsik” and Coupang Play’s “Cinderella at 2 AM” sharing the 10th spot with 4 votes each.
