“When Life Gives You Tangerines” has been a viral sensation on social media in recent days. The drama delivers laughter, but also many emotional scenes that leave viewers in tears. On social media, viewers are showering the show with praise, calling it one of the must-watch dramas of 2025.

Behind the success of “When Life Gives You Tangerines” is female screenwriter Lim Sang Choon. In addition to this series, Lim Sang Choon is also well known for two other acclaimed works: “When the Camellia Blooms” and “Fight for My Way”.
What many may not know is that Lim Sang Choon is considered the most mysterious screenwriter in Korea. Despite penning outstanding scripts and creating dramas beloved by millions, she has remained almost completely anonymous online instead of becoming a household name.
Lim Sang Choon has never once publicly appeared in front of the media. Even when she won a Best Screenplay award for “When the Camellia Blooms”, she did not attend the ceremony; director Cha Yeong Hoon accepted the award on her behalf. For this reason, even those who search the internet to find out what she looks like will come up empty-handed — it’s an impossible mission.

Another notable fact about Lim Sang Choon: during a 2017 press conference for “Fight for My Way”, it was revealed that she is a woman in her 30s. This remains one of the few public details known about her. Lim Sang Choon has expressed a desire to maintain complete anonymity — even stating that if her identity were ever revealed, she would begin writing under a different pen name.

In reality, Lim Sang Choon didn’t begin her career as a professional screenwriter. She once worked an office job. But seeing how much joy people got from watching TV dramas, she began to dream of becoming a screenwriter.
In 2013, Lim Sang Choon entered the 5th Drama Script Contest titled “Finding the Shooting Star in the Desert”. At the time, she didn’t even know the proper format for writing a screenplay. Still, that very unfamiliarity became her strength, freeing her from the constraints of convention and allowing her to develop a unique voice. Her creativity helped her make it to the finals. Over a decade later, she has become one of the most well-known writers in the Korean drama industry.
Meanwhile, the drama “When Life Gives You Tangerines” is currently streaming on Netflix.
